paint chips

Asked by GuruVRZZK Sep 08, 2018 at 11:38 AM about the 2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD

Question type: General

Do you think the dealer where you purchased your car should be responsible for fixing paint chips on your car if it is a year old or less.  Mazda is having problems with their sole red paint and a lot of people are complaining about this issue.  I have a lot of chips on my car & am taking it to dealer but don't know if they think they are responsible or not.  Your opinion please. Thanks

I contacted Mazda corporate. My chips were on hood, bumper, roof, qtr panels, doors. They're repainting the entire vehicle except for the tailgate and rear bumper. Go through Mazda's website and file a warranty complaint. They were extremely responsive. My dealership told me mine is the 3rd they repainted. GOOD LUCK!

I have a 2018 Soul Red Mazdac CX-5 Grand Touring. It wasn't a month old, and I notice three chips on the hood, and two on the door. I keep the car garaged, had the extra sealer put on when i bought it, and over the next 6 months, had more and more chips with no explanation show up. They all look like little "flecks" missing...not something rocks would do. Not scratches. I told the dealer, and although the car was 14 months old, they said bring it in, and they'd look. They filed an initial report up to Mazda HQ and they told me to bring it in for a complete look. I have noted 44 chips on 11 of 13 panels, each almost the same (different sizes, but all are little chips like a hole just fell out of the paint). The Service Writer is confidient they will fix it...he said "It's all good they opened a case are are looking at it. The only places that don't have chips is the roof and the tailgate. The hood, which is the most flexible metal panel, has 13! B ut I know if you bring it up and tell them you've read about it, they'll likely give you a fairl look. We'll see.

I bought a brand new red Mazda CX5 in April 2017 and I noticed chips on the hood and some on the side. I went to the dealer, they took some photos and never argued. They repainted the whole vehicule last month. Thank you Mazda for your service, I will not hesitate to buy another new Mazda!! Pierre

We purchased our CX5 two days before Christmas 2018. By New Years day, we had two chips in the hood. By May, my wife said, I won't be keeping this car too long, there won't be any paint on it in three years'. I took it to the dealer (The service manager has been great) had me open a case with Mazda corporate, took it to their body shop and got everything submitted to Mazda. They did a complete sand and repaint on the car. The body shop told me that the 2018 Red was the first time Mazda did a 4 step paint on their cars and they did a really bad job. They are trying their best but.. I inspected the car 5 times and rejected the work. They need to re-do areas of the car many times. After I said OK, the car sat at the dealership for 2 additional weeks to allow the paint to cure and then we paid for a clear bra on the front. In all, we were without our car for TEN (10) WEEKS. When I got the car after the clear bra installation, I hand washed and detailed the car, finding a few issues with the new paint job. I was back at the body shop yesterday to address the new issues. They told me that Mazda refuses to pay them even half of what the job is worth. He also says he has now repainted TEN (10) CX-5's so far with another half dozen scheduled to be done.

I had a 2017 Mazda CX5 and had all the problems with the paint that I am reading. The dealer and Mazda decided to paint it but only the steel panels not the plastic (which is the front and back bumper, and hatch). After they painted it there were 2 colors of paint. You could tell the difference from the new paint to the old as the new paint was much thicker. the new paint had a wave to the paint, like it was heavy at the top and pulled itself down. the dealer even told me the manufacturing plants have gone to a thin coat of paint and thats where the problems come from. So I was dissatisfied with this and they had no solution but to offer me a 2018 for the same price as what was oweing or an older, different color car. So I went with the 2018 CX5 red soul color again and the paint is flaking again. They told me it was made at a different plant and they hadn't had any complaints from that plant as of yet. Told the dealer about flaking, they took pictures and sent to Mazda and now are telling me that they haven't been having any complaints and the updated paint is working good. Only problem is the 2018 didn't have the updated paint. they are saying its rock chips inline with the mileage on the car. The car is just a year old, mileage is 140,000 kms city driving. I take care of my care especially since I was so excited to buy this car with the color. they don't want to help out this time.

Has anyone had problems with their white Mazda 2017 CX5? I have a number of paint nicks on the bumper and some on the door and inside the door well. I took my car to the dealership where it was purchased and they sent info to Mazda but they declined to pay for a repaint because they said the problems had only been with the red, but mine are clearly abnormal and plentiful.

I bought my Mazda CX5 Soul Crystal Red in July 2018 and Noticed chips of paint missing in December of that year. We contacted our dealer who said bring it in. We took the car to the dealership and they argued that the chips were from stones (at this stage the car only had 10,000Kms on it) . We gathered images from the internet and had to argue to get the dealership to get Mazda involved. After a lot of to and fro, Mazda told us they would respray the car. In December 2019 they finally gave us the go ahead to drop the car at the dealership. The car was resprayed and returned to us in February 2020. Upon inspection we found that the paint job was well below standard and got Mazda to inspect it as several of the panels were different colours. We had to drop the car back to the dealership and it was sent for respray. It returned to the dealership in early March and we were finally called to inspect it at the end of March but found the car had spots and runs in the paint and all the plastic panels were now scuffed and all panels had scratches. There were sanding pads left in the engine bay and some seals in the door frames were damaged or missing. Mazda has taken the car for a third respray and now, in June 2020, have had my once in a life time new car, for six months (out of 24 that I've owned it) We await the return of our car to the dealership for inspection. I certainly will never buy a car from that dealership again and will probably never buy another Mazda. I might add that I already owned a Mazda 3 so was very disappointed with this outcome.

I'm glad I came across several posts about the red paint not holding up on the 2017 CX-5. I was just looking at a red one last night....I don't think I'll be purchasing due to this issue. I'm getting rid of my 2004 Hyundai Sante Fe that had issues with paint and clear coat peeling and don't want a repeat issue.

I have just started to get chips on my Soul Red CX 5 even though I picked it up January 2018 I think I am in for a fight because it didn’t happen in the first 12 months but I have contacted the dealer and the inspection is next week. I have checked the warranty and it should be covered so fingers crossed.

I also have a 2017 Mazda CX-5 with the Crystal Soul Red paint and I am having small chips coming off the car. Mostly on the hood and front of the vehicle but there are several all around the body. I only have 25K miles on it and have always garaged it and taken extra care. Not a happy camper.I will be taking it back to the dealership to have this settled soon. Did not spend this kind of money to have a crappy looking car.

Warranty check on Tuesday I will post the dealers response but intend to take it further with fair trading if they don’t come to the party. The paint is flaking of every time I drive it.

Hi everyone. I experienced the same issue with Crystal Soul Red Mazda CX-5. Been using the car, about 10 months now, keep well in a roof garage. However, I noticed more than 50 paint chips around the car including the roof. Argued with the service center, and they claimed chips caused by the stone!. As of now, what I can say they don't want to be responsible with the poor painting service!. I am really disappointed. Please help me how you guys argue with them and give the strongest justification until I can get the whole car repaint.

I have had a good experience with the dealer warranty claim accepted and just waiting for the repair to be scheduled but they advised that it would take a while so the paint work is just deteriorating while I wait. A lone car is also promised so I won’t be inconvenienced.
