I have a 2017 CX-5. According to the owners manual, it has a 14.8-gallon fuel tank, when the fuel gauge nears empty (say 10-15 miles to go) it only takes 11.0-11.5 gallons.

I have slightly over 2000 miles on the odometer and have filled the tank 7
times. If I plot "Gallons Added to Tank" vs "Miles to Empty" it form a straight line
with a zero intercept of 11.7 gallons.

While I understand completely that there might be as much as a gallon still in the tank when the tank registers "empty" in order to accommodate the fuel pump and sender, I did not expect nearly 3 gallons left. Mazda must be applying a huge factor of safety when they calculate miles to empty. Thank you for your response.
I have a 2017 Mazda CX-5 and have noticed the exact same issue. When filling the tank it tops out at around 11.7 gallons (with 10- 15 miles left on the computer). I called the service department today and couldn't get an explanation. I emailed Mazda today and will see if they have an answer. Very frustrating!
I heard back from Mazda. They indicated the car has 2-3 gallons remaining when the computer is at zero miles left. It's essentially a reserve. Check page 9-5 in manual.
Thank you Jan for the info. My 2017 Mazda CX-5 has the same issue and the service department has no idea why.

I also have the same problem of filling up the tank. Each time I fill up the tank in the gas station, the trigger triggers very soon (11.7 gallons); then I continue filling little by little and I get 3.5 additional gallons; This takes away a lot of time and I do not like it. Check my CX 5 below and I could see that the inlet tube to the tank is connected by half the height instead of the top of the tank; this is a bad design. Mazda should fix it.
When I fill my empty tank, it only gives me 315 miles of gas, how about you guys?
Yes, when I fill the car, i only receive about 310-320 miles of gas also. I have a 2016 Mazda CX-5, fwd.
I used to get around 398 Miles per tank. About 4 months ago, I noticed it was only filling up at about 364 miles per tank. Anyone else notice this problem? 2017 CX-5
Mazda CX5 from day one is releasing a fuel smell in garage after full refilling. The day we drove this vehicle from dealer parking lot with 1/2 tank. Techs found carbon filter soaked in fuel, explaining this with overfilling the tank on pump. Refill stopped on first click of the pump, different pumps had been used for refill of this car. Smell in a parked car is present also on 1/4 of tank. Appreciate in advance your kind opinion.
My CX5 2019 Mazda releases heavy fuel smell in garage after each full refill. Dashboard signs overfill tank after the first click of the fuel tank. Dealer replaced a charcoal canister, hoping that it was related to an accidental overfilling. But, the story repeats every refill and withdraw of the fuel hose after the first click. I have a strong thought that it is a fuel tank's level sensor that positioned over the maximum level of the tank. Does anyone have or had similar issue with this particular model? Thank you!
