The tire pressure monitor has been on and
now the malfunction indicator light came on
what is the cause?

Check tire pressure cold. If they are at specs then the system needs diagnostics performed. The sensors usually run 8 to 10 years but climate can effect them.

Visit your local auto parts store and have them scan the computer for trouble codes. Most stores will do it for free. Post the codes and we can help further. The check engine light has nothing to do with the tire pressure (TPMS) light. There's two separate things going on. One with the tire pressure and another with the engine or transmission.
