2002 Lincoln LS stops starting randomly - not battery or starter and has been doing this for years many mechanics have looked at it

Asked by LiafromSC Sep 10, 2018 at 09:17 PM about the 2002 Lincoln LS V8

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car is a Lincoln ls w approx 170k miles . For the last two
years before I sold it it had this same problem  and I had
tried to take it to a mechanic look at it for a week and
couldn’t get it to do the same thing. I then sold it to a
friend who is very close to me.  She knew of the problem,
however The problem has gotten significantly worse
because she drives the car lot more than I ever did. the
car overheats easily but there’s no issues with the
transmission itself.  I am some  what mechanically inclined
however I  don’t know  if this is a problem I can tackle
because a couple mechanics I  took it to-during the time
that I owned it - have said that Lincolns are generally
complicated cars to work on .
Basically the car will just stop and then won’t  start
completely randomly. it has nothing to do the battery as
she took it to get the battery  exchanged And now has a
brand new one. She had thought maybe it was related
because the car would sometimes start up again with a
jumpstart. To me during the time that I had it the problem
is completely random I would literally be sitting there
trying to get it to start ,walk across the street to grab a
drink or something ,come back , and it would start again.
She’s been driving a lot , for long distances and i imagine
that has something to do with the problem getting worse .
Their most recent mechanic would just “tinker with some
things “ as she put it - and it would start up again but then
the problem would of course reoccur . The reason why I
am so concerned with this even though it’s no longer my
car is because I pretty much raised her young son During
the time She was struggling a lot in first couple years of
life  . Now that she’s doing better, I would like her to have
a reliable car for her to be able to take him to the park ,
the doctor , whatever .  it stresses me out because I know
she’s paid a lot of people that don’t have their mechanic
license to look at it and it’s just been such a nightmare for
her. I paid someone twice to get it fixed and the first time
he charged me over 1k to literally only  replace the spark
plugs and told me He had fixed it. Basically he  just took
advantage of me -(it was a mobile mechanic ,  which
generally don’t have great reputations in my area ) and
the second time as I said they couldn’t figure out what it
was even though it was the most highly rated mechanic in
town .  I should add that whatever the problem is it does
not come up on the computer diagnostic .
Of course ask me any questions but I don’t really have
that much information because no one‘s been able to find
a significant issue. I’m just hoping that someone knows of
this issue happening in Lincolns and can tell me what they
did to fix it
thank you in advance
