HI did you try to flush the engine and rad., If that does not work the rad mite Ned to b change.Good luck.Lionel
many things to try, when it is cool, on the bottom of the radiator, there is a screw tap, it drains the coolant, open in, again the coolant will pour out, then fill the top with a water hose, making sure it is not clogged, driving helps keep the engine cool, by air constantly hitting it. how fast after start at idle will it get hot, 5-15 minutes, is more likely a water pump, but can also be thermostat sticking, thermostat is the cheapest to change, start there, after confirming the radiator flows freely....let me know
There is a resouvier on the passenger side of motor for the fan coolant. This may be low and if so the fan will not work properly when idling. It takes Mercon V. I went to several mechanics and they always did the same thing thermostat and radiator checks but I went online and found out the problem. And what you know...the fluid was very low. 600 dollars for 3 dollar solution. Goes yo show you the professionals don't always know what problems are they just take your money sometimes and fix something.lol. even if its not broken
Check Antifreeze, then check to see if cooling fans are working. When you are stopped no air is crossing the radiator therefore it gets hot.

If its a 3.9 liter v-8 .. air in coolant system causes all kinds of problems..on level ground, remove the filler cap on top of thermostat with a hex wrench and fill it full with the cap removed from the coolant resevoir.. then fill up coolant resevoir just till coolant leaks over edge of fill area at thermostat.. the trick is to remove air behind thermostat .. there is also a bleeder valve beside the coolant resevoir that can be used to do this..
I have found that if cooling ok while moving but running hot while not moving, look at your radiator cooling fans...electric or manual
Usually the degas bottle slowly rots and will not show signs of leakage, but if it's yellowed, replace it, then put a purge kit on the heater hose line, and purge from there with the bleeder open until all the air hisses out of it and you have a steady dribble...make sure the level at the degas bottle (or as some would call, the recovery tank) is to factory spec...I went round and round with my 2003 LS v8 on the overheating until I did this, practically replacing everything over the course of a year...but purging from the heater hose will push the air out of the coolant system better than ANY Lincoln recommended process, and air in the system KILLS the plastic parts of any LS's cooling system. The pressure building usually causes cracks to form in the plastic components...
Hello did you get your cooling problem fixed ? If so what was the issue.

Same problem on 2002 v6. Dealer diagnosed bad hydraulic fan pump. I took to another shop and they said cooling fan was locked up and wouldn'tt turn to cool engine while idling and not moving. I have had radiator flushed with new coolant, water pump replaced and new fan motor installed. Will find out tomorrow if problem persists or not. This problem with over heating on the ls is quite common for some reason.
Hello i have a 2000 lincoln ls v8 with 87000 mile on it and it overheats when driveing so i pull over shut it off turn it right back on and its back to normal and wont overheat in park. Anyideas?
Hello Billy I have the exact same problem, please let me no if you find the reason. Thank you
Be sure that the idle pullies are not bad. My puppies were bad causing the belt not to have the correct tension for the water pump to spin consistently
