In order to protect your engine and the warranty, you should have your engine oil/filter change done before one year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. Your oil change indicator in the vehicle may say to do it sooner based on your driving habits, temperature, trip length, etcetera. Check your owners manual. If you don't go to the dealer for service, be sure to have documented proof to protect your warranty.
I changed my oil at the 10K mark and thought, how great, saves time and money. Well, the oil was as black as a starless night. Growing up repairing cars, that oil was way too black for keeping a healthy car. I now change my oil every 5K. A great piece of mind and long-term investment in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Food for thought!!

You can never hurt an engine by changing oil too often but studies on police cars and taxi cabs showed little difference in engine wear between 5,000 and 10,000 mile oil changes. Go with the recommended interval in the owner's manual, use the correct grade for your climate, and I prefer synthetic. Black oil is carbon which indicates a rich mixture, short trips in a cold climate or a heavy foot on the gas pedal. It looks bad but probably doesn't hurt the engine. I worked on diesel engines a lot and their oil goes black the first time you drive after an oil change. Diesels easily last 500,000 miles.
