I think you need two chipped keys to make a duplicate key. A key without the chip won't work. The car with either start and then die or not start at all. If you only have one key you need to go to a dealer with the one key to get a duplicate.
I just bought a non chip key to replace the key I lost. The new one will not turn the ignition over,, it just makes the car beep as if there is a key in there. I just paid $120 at a lock smith for a key that does not work. It has to chipped...save your money!

I have a2006 Mazda MPV LX and had regular key made and it works perfectly. Drove vehicle for about 350 miles ,no problems ?
