Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've been stranded 2 weeks out of town with
my 4 kids. I have a 2004 Mazda MPV it
cranks but doesn't start. When I first lift the
hood the fuse for the fuel pump was melted
but it wasn't blowed. I put a new fuel pump
relay, that wasn't it and a new fuse that
wasn't it. So this guy put some gas down
the tube under the hood and it cranked but it
cut off. So he said it's the fuel pump. I had
somebody put the new fuel pump on and it's
still not cranking, the fuel pump isn't coming
on at all. So the guy said it's not getting
power to come on. So I replaced the fuel
pump wire harness connector using 18-14
gauge wire connectors. When I listened for
the fuel pump to come on, I didn't hear
anything but I do hear the clicking relays
can someone please help. I searched
google and it seems I'm the only person
who came across a problem like this, then I
came here and I see similar situations but
no good answer to solve the problem.
Please help. Thanks in advance.

I called a mechanic shop to do what you said and to fix the problem as well. They're going to charge me $100. Do you think that's a reasonable price ? Or should I try and fix it myself ?
