mazda mvp catalitic converter

the catalitic converter on my mvp is out or the comp. is saying it is but the vehicle runs perfectly if it is out are there any ways around spending 5 or 6 hundred dollars on a new cat. I dont know that much about the mvp's so any advise would be greatly apreciated
