Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Tribute has an incredibly loud thumping puddering noise upon cranking!  It's so loud people around can hear it.  It's getting increasingly worse and lasting longer.  It's a thumping type "Pdddddddddd" noise!  Any thoughts?  I'll also say, the AC doesn't work, there's a leak in the rear main seal (I'm told).  That has been out for months.  And the air bag indicator light needs to be replaced (every so many months i get the dinging upon start up 5 X 5 times).  Don't know if there is a connection in any of that or my car is just OLD.  Help please!!!

Yes, your flywheel or starter could have a missing or awkward/damaged tooth. It could be an alignment issue with you starter and flywheel gear? The other problems you list are not related to the thumping/starting problem.

Do you guys have any idea what cost might be involved with fixing a damaged or misaligned fly wheel or starter?

I would recommend a mechanic to look at it and properly diagnose the problem first. Answers here are educated guesses based upon your description of the problem(s). Get a diagnoses and more than 1 estimate for the repairs.
