Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2007 Mustang, 6 cyl. that suddenly will not accelerate past 20 MPH
in drive, but will drive fine in 3. My wife was merging onto the highway when
she heard a loud "pop" and all of a sudden the car slowed down to 20 with
high RPMS but no acceleration past 20 MPH. I drove the car and it will go
until it needs to shift into 2 maybe 3 and will lose power then jump, lose
power then jump. It will however drive fine in 3. Any ideas?

Any check engine lights?
When I say lose power i should really be saying no acceleration. the engine sounds fine and is revving but will not move the car faster that 20.
Then it will jump forward then back to no acceleration.
Have you checked transmission fluid?
My only concern about it being something simple like that was the loud noise she heard right before it happened.
Sounds crazy but have you done a thorough visual inspection?
Are all plugs and coils intact?
I have and nothing looks out of place or broken/popped from what I can see. I am no expert though.
Take a small hammer or screwdriver handle and tap on the catalytic converter to see if this is shattered inside? Should be solid. No rattling pieces
I have heard of coils and plugs popping like you describe and then having acceleration issues. MOST of the time it comes with a check engine light. Not all the time.
Hose blow off? Vacuum or turbo line?
Backfire? Water in tank?
Too much back pressure? Do you have a hole in the intake?
My car...I would check/test coils and plugs after a successful visual inspection. Your description sounds electrical and result of performance.
sorry I'm just getting back to you. I will check some of these things when i get home and check back in with you on the results, Thanks.
