Whenever I see a question that concerns the odor of gasoline, I try to warn folks about the danger of fire. There should never be a smell of gas, especially if it's so strong you can smell it from the cabin. Please be careful, cars can be replaced, you can not be. A 2001? Fuel injected? Gas leak somewhere, to stare the obvious. If its a carburetor it may simply be getting flooded and if so, crank engine with no foot on gas petal and that will suck the gas in to the intake, maybe making it even harder to start but that reduces the chance of fire
