correct way to engage 4wd?

Most vehicles you can put in 4wheel drive on the fly. Sometimes I have put my truck in neutral to get it out of 4 wheel drive when it was having trouble disengaging.

I have 2001 Mazda tribute with 1980CC but its fuel consumption is high to about 6Km for 1 Litre of petrol,is this normal???If not what should i do
