Check engine light/flashing od light

Asked by Montego_4607 Mar 11, 2017 at 04:38 PM about the 2000 Mazda MPV ES

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just got a 2000 mpv, the engine light was flashing
when I got it and also the od light flashs. There
were 5 codes and the 3 I remember were random
misfire, misfire on 5 and o2 sensor. The car runs
ruff, sometimes starts easy other time have to
crank it for awhile to start.  I was driving on the
freeway and notice it's running at 3000 to 3500
rpm, speedometer don't work.  I heard a pop sound,
remind me of plastic sound, maybe it was a rock, I
looked at the dash and noticed that now the check
engine light is now solid. I'm a girl that's not real
mechanical but would like any information on
where to start with this and your thoughts on the
lights/rpm issue. Should of known he was lying,
he's a lawyer!

Most likely needs a full tune up, AKA Spark plug & plug wire set. You may need a coil pack. Give it a good overall maintenance. Look for vacuum leaks too.

I can't explain the speedo blanking at 3,000-3,500 RPM, but this is almost exactly the range for the IMRC (Intake Manifold Runner Control) Valve to operate. It should not have any relation to the speedo; it flips a set of valves inside the intake manifold, which makes the intake air travel a little farther/less far. Something to do with tuning. If it isn't working, then the car should run rough at that RPM. If it doesn't run rough around 3k-3.2k RPM, forget you ever read this. The other guy's advice about changing spark plug wires & plugs is good; likely to solve "miss" codes. Good luck Good luck.
