I have an 1999 Mazda Millenia. It runs and then it will not drive anymore. After 600 dollars of work still does the same thing. What could it be?

My son will drive it about 18 miles then when he starts to drive back home it will not drive.

is it stuttering out, is it just dying what are some of the symptoms before it stops working?
