CRV Screen
Asked by 3rdCRV Jul 16, 2018 at 03:12 PM about the 2018 Honda CR-V EX AWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I was just sitting in my 2018 CRV when all of a sudden the screen started
beeping and changing. It continued to change to and from all different
screens for a whole minute. I have no idea why this happened. Is this a defect
or just a random malfunction?

I'm having the same problem. This is the second time plus two other's issues.
I've experienced the same problem 3x now when all of a sudden the display panel beeps and the brightness display keeps showing while the display unit is blinking
According to South Eastern Honda here in Florida, they are aware of the problem. I've had mine replaced once on my CR-V EX. I told them I wasn't happy about them not having a solution or Honda not responding. So if you have a 2018 model, then they are darn well in knowledge of this problem and it just got passed to the 2019 models. So it leads me to go back to NIssan this year end coming. I made it very clear, it's my time and money they're messing with and I don't like it.
If your Touch Screen beeps for no reason try this: 1. Make sure the Touch Screen is dust free. 2. Set the Touch Sensitivity to Low on your settings.
Done that, I'm on the OCD side and the outside as well as the inside is impeccably clean. Thank for your reply though. Honda here has already admitted they have a problem. What they'll do is wait until the warranty runs out, then they'll slap you for a new radio. It's all about money, not the customer.

I havethe same issue. My touchscreen went haywire while driving, we video taped it. Jumping to different screens, beeping, blacking out it went on for a solid 10 minutes. Its the 3rd time its happened. When calling the dealership they said they would have to charge $130 just to look at it and f it warranty we dont have to pay it, but if its not warranty they have to charge it. This is a 2018 Honda CRV Touring edition. Its a year old and this is a major issue.
It was definitely under warranty for me. The last time I had it in they did some resetting of the display sensitivity. It has been no trouble since. Try that. There is no way they should be charging you $130 to look at it when you have a 2018!!! Their motives are suspect.
I'm having the same issues!!

I have had the same issue with my 2018 crv touring. Also took a video of it happening. Honda told me in February 2019 they are aware and actively working on a fix. I was told this summer during my service visit they would have the update for the software in September of this year. I will be calling them soon to see if the update is available. They had said they will be fixing the problem free of charge once they obtain the update to fix it.
The software fix is supposed to be in I have an appointment next week for the install Let’s hope it works If not it’s the unit which is still under warranty Hoping for the best
Going in today for this problem. Any word Guru1JRD1 on the fix?
I brought my CR-V in and they replaced the screen. It continued too do the same beeping/changing screens dance. They also told me to keep the sensitivity setting to low and keep the screen clean. All was good for about 1 year now and yesterday it started again. I will be bringing it in again. There is no chance in Hell that I will pay for this fix.
Took mine to the local dealer. Honda is aware of the problem but they dont have a solution. I have heard someone has filed a lawsuit for this problem and the cracked windshields. I look for this to be a class action in the future.
I thought I was going crazy until I read all these responses. It starts with the brightness screen and it's always when the sun has been on it for awhile. Today it changed to my phonebook and started making a phone call to one of my contacts. I had to pull off the road and turn off my Bluetooth connection. Have an appt this week. I hope they can do something about it. I have a 2017 still under warranty.

I have a 2018 CRV. In a year and a half I had only about four instances of the the brightness level self adjusting while the display was beeping and flashing and sometimes going black. Went to the dealership today and low and behold it malfunctioned, even doing some stuff I haven't seen before (all the 25 miles to the dealership). However, they didn't even need to see the video I took. Said they had a service bulletin for the issue and performed a software update. We'll see.
I just had an incident about three weeks ago. Mind you they already replaced my radio once and updated the new one once. so they looked at it and they came out and said I had the sensitivity up on high. well if that's the case and you know it's going to do that, then why have it on the radio. I also asked if they are updating the software as the customers come in for regular service. They said no. only if the customers complains about it. I said not even they are on record, they still said no, "only if the customer complains about it". So now I ask myself, do I want to do business with a company like that. The answer is NO! I get a new car ever three years, well I'm two years into this one and I'll start researching in about 6 months. Good luck.
Our 2017 CR-V started doing this in late 2018. We've had it checked 3x and, of course, the mechanics have no answer for us. The car is going in again in a couple of days for the same problem, but honestly---what can they do?
ScoutCromie answered 4 years ago
We did take the car in for this issue. There was a software update that had to be done. In and out in 15 minutes. Since the update there has been no reoccurence of the original issue. Fingers crossed that this was the issue, even the Honda guys didnt know. It has been about 8 weeks since it was done and no problems to report.
ScoutChrome, the dealer here at Southern Honda, Palm Bay Florida quoted an hour to do the update. I believe I mentioned somewhere they replaced my radio and the new one acted up about two months after the update. Lets put it this way. There is no way Honda is going to fix anything they don't have to. They just put on the paper "could not duplicate", then when your warranty expires they'll say, OH! we have to replace your radio. They are no different then any other shyster.
I have same issue. Is there an update that will fix it?
ScoutCromie answered 4 years ago
We had an update done and so far so good. We have not had a recurrence of the issue. When your vehicle does this make sure you digitally tape it and show it to the dealer.. otherwise they will tell you they cant recreate it... the digital tape will be your proof. There is a recall notification on this that your dealer should have received, we had to really give it to them for them to check and realize there is a recall on this.

Thank you for the link. I see the date was dated in july of 2018. My radio and replaced before that time. They actually tried to weasel out of it but I had already taken a video if it several time. Then when it happened around two moth late they said the touch sensitivity was set on high. well if this the case then that function should be removed from the software. This is when I got into them with not being a transparent Stealership and I had a friend who just bought a 2019 and they didn't even upgrade the software on that before they released it to him.
Yes they aware of the problem, that is not the issue. The issue is, they claim the update is the fix, it is NOT! They said to keep the screen set to low, that is not the answer. They have no answer and I don't think they intend to do anything about it. Those who had their radio replaced, I hope the dealer gave you the new code that goes with it. You'll need it if you have your battery changed by someone that doesn't know there is a code to the radio that has to be entered to make it functional again..
Had same problem...beeping, flashing, going on and off. The dealer, well aware of the problem, did a “software update.” Lasted for 2 weeks. Believe problem had to do with sun light. Was in a drive- thru line when it started flashing. Sun was hitting it directly. As soon as I pulled into shade, it stopped. Go figure.
I have a 2015 crv, and i’m on my 3rd radio which is exhibiting the same problem. Understand that problem not fixed for 2019 models. Are radios fixed for 2020? I can’t see buying a new radio that I have zero confidence that I won’t end up with same problem. Gonna trade. No more Honda
I have the same crazy flashing of the screen, changing screen and then turning off all together. It seems to be sensitive to direct sunlight.
ScoutCromie is your still working good? I called my dealership and of course they acted like they had no clue until I had them look for the issue. Any particular update it is called so I can better assist them? Also did anyone else get charged for their update? I bought my 2017 3 months ago and they want me to pay for it.
I have the same issue with 2019 CRV. have an appointment to get it checked out. Any permanent solutions yet would be helpful
Took my 2017 CRV in today and dealer is charging 129 to do the software update. I complained about having to pay for something that is clearly an issue from the manufacturer. Very poor handling by Honda. Customers shouldn't have to pay for this.
Guru3BMHD - Yes another brand car, SUV or truck. That's the only answer. I"ve had about 5 honda's in the past including my 2018 CR-V EX. Last one for me.
mlbMichigan answered 4 years ago
I had this issue, went to Honda and they performed an update. 2 months later it's happening again. only a few months left to my warranty. they will likely perform another update after which I will be required to pay for anything more. joining class action lawsuit and as soon as I break even on my loan I'm selling this. very dangerous problem. had brown sunspots on the screen too, which come and go.
Class action lawsuit? Any info on how I can join?
Libby, I haven't heard of any class action lawsuit yet. However, look at the post above yours by GuruJNGBL with the link that was posted https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10163184-0001.pdf should get you in the door, they've had software problems since 2017. Now with respect to the TSB 19-066 you can print that out as backup and go tot he dealer and tell them point blank, it's know issue that they've had theses problems and fix it without cost.. Good luck, they lost me as a customer.
I have a 2018 with the same problem. Had an update 2 months ago and the brightness is going crazy again, the volume gets stuck and screen blackness. You can’t even control the radio through steering wheel when this happens.

2017 Honda CR-V. Entire screen went blank. Dealer says needs to be replaced. The electronics in this car have always been bad. Can’t believe Honda’s have deteriorated to this level. I’ve owned 7 and this will be it for me.
Good News! Honda has new software update to resolve your issues! My 2018 CR-V Touring infotainment center would go whacky every once in a while, displaying the brightness control and beeping as it flipped from program display to program display. It's Sept. 2020 and my local Honda dealer (Thayer Honda in Bowling Green, Ohio) rectified the problem once and for all, with installation of new software. The update took about 20 minutes to complete and I couldn't be more pleased to have my CR-V performing normally again!
Guru949SXC answered 4 years ago
In Dec 2019 we had the software update for the issue you describe on our 2017 CRV. Early Sept the display is dead and the Honda emblem flashes. According to my research there is class action suit and a recall on other Honda brands display units. I pursued with Honda America and they were not receptive to helping, although I saw some instances where they offered to replace for $279 vs the $740 we are being quoted for a refurbished one. I’ve owned 5 Honda’s, 3 of which were purchased new. Next car will be a Toyota
Our 2017 CRV has now been having this issue for 2 years. We were told by the dealership early this year that an update was on the way. Still waiting. On the plus side, the issue does seem to happen less frequently. It also appears to be the result of the way the touch screen is hit by the sun. I know that sounds odd, but there are certain locations at specific times that set the problem in motion. Not every time, mind you, but enough to make me think it's more than coincidence.
Almost forgot---this is either the 12th or 13th Honda we've owned since 1979. We've never experienced a problem like this; it seems as if Honda simply doesn't care.
FightingEngineer answered 4 years ago
I'm an electrical engineer, and seeing the issue with the entertainment system, braking and even the key reprogramming. Are other CRV owners interesting in joining together? I can create a separate website to drive this.
FightingEngineer - Fighting Engineer: I appreciate your offer but it's not just the entertainment system and key reprogramming. Lane assist is an accident waiting to happen, auto stop is the worst. One of the biggest examples would be, if you have a car in front of you and the camera see's it, it will adjust (slow down) when that car slows down or speeds up according to your cruise setting. However, if you have a car in front of you and you're doing a decent speed on a three lane highway, and that car pulls out into the left or the right and he was within 1-1/2 car lengths of the car in front of him, Honda will not register the new target in front of it. Okay so the stage is set. the problem that make it worse is a lot of drivers will do that because the one car length coming up to a red light means the world to them and it leaves you darn little time to have the new target reregister which in my case it never does. I haven't repeated this test at speeds about 40 because it fails consistently at lower speeds. Another scenario, if I'm behind a car in the right or left lane (it doesn't make any difference) and they decide to make a right or left turn and I'm in cruise the electronics does what it's supposed to do and slows down, however, it continues to slow even after the care is totally out of the way by ay least 20 feet and made it's turn. The hysteresis of my 2018 is totally wacked. I brought it to their attention and the usually reply is, "can't duplicate it." I just recently took out a KIA, Subaru, Toyota and they performed flawlessly. So needless to say after all the years I've been with Honda it's time to go. Thank you for the offer and maybe others will decide to go your way. I'm handicapped now and don't need Honda to make it worse. Good luck
Has anyone pursued arbitration? What were your results? I have a 2018 crv with all the terrible glitches you all are experiencing. No fix several visits. Tons of waisted time.
FightingEngineer, I'm w/ you! What website?
To my knowledge this is not law suite. should be? absolutely.

I also got the update two weeks ago for the brightness issue.... now it’s happening again. Does anyone know if the software update is a true fix or a temporary bandaid?
Happening on my CRV Hybrid here in the UK, be interesting to see how my dealer in North Wales and Honda UK are dealing with this, I'll report back accordingly

Class action lawsuit by Lemberg Law LLC: Woo, et al., v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
Guru9ZBHTL: So are you saying this lawyer frim has started a class action sute or it's a firm that will?
My 2019 CRV hybrid infotainment system has now been upgraded from software version 026/159 to 026/179 and Hardware (EEPROM) from version 048/003 to Hardware version 048/003 by my North Wales dealer. We’ll see how that goes and I’ll report back!

See https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCOURTS-cand-3_19-cv- 07042/pdf/USCOURTS-cand-3_19-cv-07042-1.pdf It is a lawsuit that has been filed, but apparently it is not going so well. So far it seems to be very limited, and limited to California (not nationwide). Plus I called my dealer and he said there was a software upgrade to fix the problem, but they wanted to charge me $75+ to do the upgrade. Pisses me off. I've owned Hondas since 1989, but never again.

Had 2 appointments for odyssee and 18 crv but their technician had a family emergency each time. THE only tech there who could do work. Rescheduled appt again. Sounds suspicious. Car under warranty. When out of warranty they can probably fix. Last honda for me.

We've had a 2017 CRV since new 4 years ago. No display problems until this month when it started beeping. Display is clean. Screen sensitivity is set to low, and I've rebooted the infotainment system. I do not understand is why the screen being clean, and sensitivity being set to low is relevant to the beeping. The reason I don't understand is because I set the beeping volume to "Off -Never beep". So, when I touch the screen to navigate it does NOT beep, that is, it is properly working according to the "Off" setting. And so if the screen were very dirty and the sensitivity were high that would not cause a beep. But now here's THE PROBLEM the screen still beeps randomly even though it does not beep when the screen is touched for (successful) screen input and navigation.

We got relief on the road by doing this. Searching for a piece of tape now. Will try a software update when we stop for the day.

Thank you! I’ve been trying to find the light sensor forever. Mine does this ALL the time if I have my moon roof open and the sun hits the dash. The whole system has been replaced, and they’ve installed the update. It’s the light sensor for sure. Never happens at night! Only solution I’ve found is to turn the car off and back on again.

I bought my 2020 CR-V EX L in Jan of 2021. In March, the radio which, for me, is always on, suddenly developed a mind of its own - went to FULL BLAST and I could not control the volume with either the knob on the Infotainment system itself or the control on the steering wheel. I tried turning it off, changing stations, and then it turned itself off then on then off several times. It seemed to resolve after a few minutes, and I was finally able to be in control, turn the volume back to normal range, get back to my favorite station... My dealership's service department had no solution for me because they don't have this problem reported for *2020* CR-Vs. I've read that what may have caused the issue is that, while I was at the red light, the full sun was shining directly on the screen, and the problem resolved after I had turned the corner away from the sunshine. It was incredibly distracting and distressing. I dread it happening again, though next time I'll know what is happening and see if I can get it recorded to show the service department. (I also fear this happening when I'm in Phone mode and having it dial and hang up on my customers!!)
We've had the beeping and display issues in our 2019 Honda CR-V. Since it only happens in full sun, we thought perhaps it may be due to heat rather than software. We pointed the a/c vents down so cold air flows over the screen, placed a towel on the dash, and placed a brimmed hat on the dash above the screen to shade it from the sun. Beeping stopped after a minute or so of this cooling treatment.
This is also happening to me, but only when my sunroof is open and the sun is beaming in directly on the screen. Now I leave my sunroof closed until it isn't pointed at the screen.
Update to my response above, we did take our car in to the dealer two days ago and they did do the software update. They told my husband there had been a recall and that this should fix the problem. We shall see....
Honda should be forced to recall these garbage head units. This problem has been ongoing since 2017, but somehow we are supposed to believe Honda can't figure out how to fix it. Not likely: what is really going on is they don't want to cover the cost of a recall and redesign. Please go to the NHTSA complaint form and file a complaint, perhaps NHTSA will force them to do a recall. What is the problem? My guess is they used an extremely cheap and low grade Android tablet and didn't hire a competent software engineer to do QA on the software. https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#index I had a similar bad faith situation with my 2006 Civic (defective suspension that ate tires) and they didn't actually fix it until there was a class action lawsuit. Honda knew about this problem but chose not to recall it even after the myriad of problems it caused. In the end we got a few thousand dollars that didn't cover the actual costs incurred which included (in my case) 4 complete sets of tires before 65k miles, destroyed strut, multiple alignments, etc. Take a look here. I hope the same thing doesn't have to happen with these garbage audio units. https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/honda-civic-rear- suspension-defect-settlement-preliminarily-approved/ Maybe we can convince
FOUND A SLEW OF SERVICE BULLETINS for CRV 2017 here: https://www.aboutautomobile.com/Technical-Service-Bulletin/2017/Honda/CR- V/Electrical-System I have screen/battery/electrical issues with my car. I printed out 6 service bulletins & I'm going to call my dealership & see what they'll fix, even though it's past warranty. I'm TICKED cause there's a battery issue one dated from 2017 & everyone swore there was NO problem!!!! Good luck! This is my LAST Honda.

After at least three years of this wacky radio issue I finally took my 2018 CR-V Touring in for the software update last week. So far it is performing properly. The bummer is the dealer said it wasn’t covered by my extended warranty because it was a service bulletin and not a recall. I had to pay $150 for the upgrade. Is there a lawsuit I can join?
Me too, I also want to join a lawsuit. 2018 CR-V EX-L nav. It's hard to pinpoint cause, but I think it's thermal in nature. Seems to happen when display is much warmer than surrounding area.
