Are you sure you have to have the engine on to do so? Today's vehicles don't use keys, so when you get into the car, press the start stop button without putting your foot on the brake, This will turn ON the vehicles electrical system or accessory mode. Can you open the sunroof now?
I've tried that many times but the only way it will work is with the engine running..
