motor mileage reset after changing motors

looking at a 2004 colorado . the truck reads 400,000 miles
but the dude told me he replaced the engine and it has
160,000

So the truck has 400k and the engine 160k. Offer him $400 if you really like it.

just confuses me . i figured the odometer would show the engine mileage not the body mileage
