Do I need any additional harness kits for flat towing a 2019 Jeep Cherokee

Asked by GuruVVTTL Aug 13, 2018 at 07:50 PM about the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 4WD

Question type: General

I have been seeing, hearing, mixed and different answers to the question of whether or not I need any additional flat tow wiring Harness Kits for a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. Am looking at the Latitude Plus4x4 and a Trailhawk. There is no mention of it in the owner manual. Also does anyone have information as to the need for a battery charging attachment due to flat towing with the ignition engaged

Not certain what you're asking, but I'll take a stab. I have a 2019 Trailhawk with towing and it has both the 4-wire and 7-wire tow connectors. on the rear of the vehicle (which is pretty nice -- I used to have to carry adapters)

The question is not about wiring to pull a trailer. It refers to flat towing the car behind an RV. Previous years of the Cherokee sometimes developed "Death Wobble" do to the electronic steering and required a $400 wiring kit from Jeep. I believe that this has been corrected on the 2019 model but be sure to confirm this yourself.

You need a brake kit for the Jeep and you need a light bar or a hook up for the brake and tail lights on the Jeep. Try a RV retailer.

I bought a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk last year. Yes, you can flat tow it but you need2 things - a regular wiring kit that delivers all the necessary connections between your RV and the Jeep's lights, etc. AND you need a very special harness - Mopar #68321424AB - about $140. The harder part is finding a dealer who knows how to or is willing to install it. I was lucky and found a very competent one. The installation is 3-4 hours. After that its pretty easy to tow the Jeep. There are the normal steps of putting it onto neutral and then a few steps to throw a switch (part of the Mopar harness) that essentially provides electricity to the power steering when the entire car is off. It is also recommended that you add a battery charging cable to the regular wiring kit as the Mopar harness does drain the battery over time.

Etrailer is a great resource but for our 2019 Jeep Cherokee toad- we needed a tow bar , base plates, 7-6 Diode wiring kit and the brake systems. We used a Roadmaster direct connect EZ-5 base plates system which include coil and brake away chains, falcon all terrain tow bars, SMi Duo brake system and 7-6 Diode kit

Just towed our 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited to the lower Florida Keys from western North Carolina without any problems. We had our BlueOx dealer, who installed the baseplates and wiring, check with the Jeep dealer concerning the harness kit. We were insured the 2019 models did not require the kit. We did have a charge cable install, and have had no battery issues. Towed well and NO Death Wobble!

I just bought a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk which will be used as a TOAD behind our Motorhome. I wasn't satisfied with any of the available taillight and brake pedal wiring kits so I designed my own... It consists of two small 2" square encapsulated modules that plug in between the wiring harness connector (no cutting into the Jeeps wiring harness) and each taillight, it involves the same sort of wiring to the 6-pin umbilical connector as the other taillight kits do. The best part is that there is NO NEED TO MODIFY THE BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH to prevent the Jeep's brake pedal from overdriving the Motorhome's turn signals.

Hi Benjamin. Just to check. Does your 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited have the 2 speed transfer case?

I’m not Benjamin so don’t know about him BUT I do know how hard it is to find out if a used Jeep for sale has the 2 speed transfer unit (ie Jeep Active Drive II - not I). I could only find out on cars where Carfax or seller had the original sticker for it. In the end I opted to just look at Trailhawks (bought a 2019) as I never once found another Cherokee with the Active Drive II (at least all 2019’s & 2020 new ones do. Didn’t look at older models.). Small shop hitch guy had one hell of a time getting the front fascia off. Took him forever & I called 2 dealers & Roadmaster & believe if the guy had a helper for keeping one part of it separated after removing some robots, as he was undoing clips, his job would have been easier. Roadmaster says the newer models are very tough to remove the front fascia.

From above, removing some RIVITS, not robots. Auto correct I guess!

eTrailer guy says that Jeep fixed the electric power steering (EPS) (death wobble) issue starting in the 2018 models. FCA is silent about the issue. Jeep Canada still list the Mopar Part Number: 68321424AB in their accessories for Recreational Towing. The US market again is silent. FCA Technical Service Bulletin: #08-029-16 Rev A has not been updated. I am still searching for an official Jeep answer. This subject has been pretty well discussed over the past couple of years. Here are some links to previous threads that might be of interest. The last thread explains how to have the EPS automatically activated whenever you attach the umbilical cord. http://www.irv2.com/forums/f85/sever...ee-240620.html http://www.irv2.com/forums/f85/jeep-...le-290529.html http://www.irv2.com/forums/f85/2016-...le-313778.html http://www.irv2.com/forums/f85/make-...ic-297500.html
