well with this information only thing we can rule out is a misfire. Then it would flash. A engine light can come on for way too many reasons to even guess, could be a loose gas cap to a bad thermostat. Have somebody scan the Merc and then post the code and we will be able to help you. The auto parts stores usualy do this for free
