Odd electrical problem

Asked by dog57 Aug 29, 2016 at 06:35 PM about the 2004 Mercury Sable LS Premium Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughter borrowed the car and she went off road with it, noticing the mud
and grass on the undercarrage. Then noticed a number of electrical systems
stopped working.
No a/c, clutch not engaging.
Fuel Gauge showing empty, tank is full
Digital Mileage odometer not working
Key in ignition chime not working
Engine warning lights not turning on when key is first on.
All of this was working fine, Ive had no problems with car at all. Checked fuses
and wire connections, did some wire testing for possible shorts. Maybe a relay
got wet and shorted out in engine compartment ???
Thank you

I suppose that is a possibility, but I suspect not a likely one. It sounds like something got disconnected someplace, or a fusible link may have blown. There is too much not working at the same time, possibly someplace in the underhood power supply, or even the ignition switch. It is very possiblt that it has nothing at all to do with the car going off the roadway, but just a coincidence on the timing of the failures. Good luck & let us know what you find.
