2000 cougar transmission going out or sensor?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a 2000 cougar automatic and the previous owners said the transmission had been going out for about a year and then went out completely. The car will sometimes work in reverse(more often than not)  but will only occasionally work in 1st. You have to press the gas really hard to get it to barely move but it will sometimes move. I keep reading online that it could be the transmission range sensor. Where is the sensor located at? would changing the sensor fix it or is it too late and it needs a trans anyway?
