what does o/d off mean on dash light of 1999 mecury sable LS

I have a 1999 mercury sable 3.0 doule overhead camshaft and my o/ d off light keep flashing and my rpm hand be going up and down and i can't give it gas unless i take my feet off gas and let the rpm go down but i drive in overdrive cause some is wrong with my single drive...and i wanna kno where is my o/d button located and since I'm driving in overdrive do my o/d pose to be on?

I mean to say i drive in D 2 but i wanna kno why it flash o/d off light if I'm not driving in o/d
