My problem with engine

Asked by Bossman3204380 Jul 20, 2016 at 07:44 PM about the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 97"  mercury mountaineer that would start
but it not like the engine isnt getting enough air in
intake. But it backfire through the fuel injector. I
think it's either the timing (belt or chain), or spark
plugs are filed out? Please help me asap.

Spark plugs being out of gap aren't enough to cause a backfire, but a too-rich air-fuel mix can. You don't mention how many miles on this engine, if it is high, and on the original timing belt they may have stretched or the tensioner is bad. You should have timing related trouble codes being thrown, so perhaps get the DTCs scanned. If you're running rich you may see codes for things like the O2 sensor in there.
