1998 Ford Ranger 4.0, automatic transmission with 4x4, not functioning properly

Asked by leecarpenter Jun 07, 2018 at 05:17 PM about the 1998 Ford Ranger XLT Standard Cab 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The four wheel drive appears to be functioning on the level parts of my hilly
property as it always has, but when I haul my golf cart up the slightest incline
my truck acts like it's in 2 wheel drive and the back wheels just spin. My
neighbors old Toyota truck, under the same conditions. pulled the golf cart
right up the hill with no problem. I understand nothing about these mechanics.

Sounds like a problem with either the transfer case or the front axle not locking.
