My 280ZX Turbo failed the smog check due to the top of the 3 warning lights on the left side of the instrument panel not coming on.  However, a gentleman who has specialized in the 240, 260 & 280 said it's not supposed to.  He said that light was only meant to warn the driver to take his/her car in for service at 30,000, at which time the computer would be reset to not light up until the 60,000 mile check & then the 90,000 miles check, @ which time the light would be disconnected because otherwise the light would stay on.  Once he told me this, I remembered that to be the case.  My question is, does anyone have the data from the Shop Manual Procedure that the mechanics had to follow at that time.  Have to take my car to the Carb Referee on Monday & would like something solid to show them as the CA DMV says that is a check engine light.  Many thanks for any info.  Cynthia

Thank you for your answers Ed, but the problem is that the light is already off & that is why it failed the smog; by the way, the car is well maintained & it passed the emissions part with flying colors. My mechanic said that light is automatically disconnected @ 90,000 or the light will stay on until it burns out, but someone obviously forgot to inform CARB. They've got us coming & going! Js, I would really like to thank you for your answer. Though Faxon is out of the manual, I'm sure they will be getting one in @ some point & I intend to buy it. I'm nearly double the age of my car, so no dig taken. :)

I used to take my turbo Z to a specialist in the San Fernando valley. I doubt they are still around but it cannot hurt to look. I have no idea what the name was.
