Half to full throttle bog on 2.4 Eclipse

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a very well maintained '05 Eclipse with the 2.4, manual trans. My
problem comes and goes. Problem is: At half to full throttle the engine will
bog down & fall flat on its face, I can even get it to do it out of gear if I floor
it, it doesn't die but cuts out then back in then out then back in around
1000-2500 rpm.. until I back the throttle off slowly to around half way then
engine revs normally. Noticed the rotten egg smell while doing this so it's
probably a rich condition. Throws no code. I checked fuel pressure
regulator, no leakage. Checked for vacuum leaks, none. Checked TPS
voltage, perfect. Rebooting the computer has no effect. Car has 204k miles
but runs perfect other than this intermittent problem that happens about 2%
of the time.

Sounds like the catalytic converter is plugged up. Just stop at an exhaust shop to have it checked out.

Well I don't think it is because it doesn't do it 98% of the time. It's just every now & then, almost as if it's something electrical. I was lucky enough to be able to hook a code reader up at parts store while it was doing it but it didn't show a code so?? Thanks for the reply though.

When a vehicle throws no codes that is an indication of a fuel issue. Just because the fuel regulator is not leaking doesn't mean it is working. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, have it hooked up, take note of the fuel pressure when the engine is idling, Rev the engine up some, the fuel pressure should stay at the proper fuel pressure. If it drops it is an indication of the fuel regulator being bad. Also pull the vacuum line off the fuel regulator while the engine is running. Fuel pressure should rise at least 5 to 7 lbs. When you step on the gas when you are driving, and it bogs down is an indication of the fuel pressure regulator not able to produce or keep the proper fuel pressure.

Problem is that this car doesn't have a fuel rail port (schrader valve) to hook up a fuel pressure gauge. I have a gauge along with an entire injector cleaning kit I use on my other cars but this car doesn't have a port to hook to.

It does act like it's the FP regulator though, but it's very intermittent. I might try to pick one up at a salvage for cheap. New one is $50+.

Yes I see that they are spendy. All you need is the right connections for the fuel pressure gauge to tie into the main line.

Thanks Rowefast for your input. I just stopped in at Autozone & used their scanner and according to it the TPS is bad. I already had fp regulator on the way for cheap & I found a tps for cheap also. O'reilly's scanner didn't detect a bad tps but Autozone's did. Will try and see. Thanks again!

If it's throwing a p0420 it's the catalytic converter you also wanna check and clean the idle air valve and make sure that its clean that could make ur car stop running while driving.
