How to turn off the Service Engine light on my 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor ?

My car is required to report to a Smog test station before I may renew
registration. The service engine light is on and I have heard that having that
light on will be cause for failing the smog test. My question are
1. how do i get the light turned off so I can register my car?
Note: I took in for oil change about 360 miles ago.
My location is California.

You can go to a parts store or a shop and have your vehicle hooked up to a diagnostic and see what the engine codes are that's causing the light to come on.
