I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder 2.4l.  While

off the clutch and give it gas the transmission is in

You not getting it into first gear with the shifter. Shifter may be worn or just needing some adjustment. Make sure you are getting neutral, then you can find first gear.

At a light I'll put it in neutral and then put the shifter in the first gear position which is the upper left corner. As I lift off the clutch and give it gas sometimes the transmission is in first but sometimes the transmission is in third while the shifter is in first position. The shifter position is straight up and center. I need to know what's going on?

I meant the shifter position for third is straight up and center.

Yea, you have a shifter problem. Should go to a shop to have it checked out.
