What would make.my 2002 Mitsubishi gallant. To
over heat and make a loud boom sound out of the
exhaust pipe.

for the overheating ; bad thermostat , low coolant , plugged radiator , blown head gasket , what does the exhaust look like " look under the oil fill cap what do you see , the boom is unburnt fuel exploding in the hot exhaust , not good , a misfire , scan for codes and get the definitions

It doesn't have a check engine light but autozone checked it and it said o2 sensor zone 1 and 1 or something similar. Would the O2 sensor cause it to die?
