you should scan for computer codes, but I suspect a bad fuel pressure regulator.
No check engine light on u can scan with out it being on?

yes, you can. sometimes in the old OBD1 computers there will be a code without a light. unfortunately, sometimes in those pre 1996 systems the lights dont help much but with that weird idle you may have a code stored. wont hurt to check. you should be able to use a paper clip jumper to get the check engine light to flash. you count the flashes to read the code. but you have to do it correctly. there are several good vids on youtube. google it and see what ya get.
Wat about the idle control valve

it is possible that you have an IAC problem, you could try cleaning it. again, youtube.
