Can I put 225/45/17 tires and 17inch rims on my 96 SL

I am running 215/55/17 and a friend of mine is running 215/45/17 on his. Not sure if the 225 will clear the strut housing cause the 215 is real close. Most tire stores can type in your car model to get clearances and use that to check against the desired tire size.
