Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok I have a 94 3000gt vr4, complete eingine but has a rod knocking, I found a 92 3000gt vr4 engine to swap it out instead of trying to repair the original, I have heard one is a two bolt main and one is a four bolt, I am not sure if this matters, and I have read they have different sensors like one has a crank sensor and one has a cam sensor. I am just trying to get some info on this before I spend the money on the other engine, so will I need to do any modifications or head swapping to make this work? Thanks

That is the crate motor is the same. Now you might have to take some of the items off your 94 to make all your electronics work and I would suggest doing that. Other than that it will bolt right up.

Although they are the same and will be an easy fix/swap are you sure about how good of a motor the 92 is? You could be opening up a huge can of worms. Myself I would rebuild the 94. Are you sure that it is a rod knocking? Is the knock low in the block(oil pan area). Or high (valve cover area). If high could be something as easy as just replacing the lifters. I always stray away from using a used motor. Cause you never really know what you are getting.

at least the 92 will have an adjustment for timing, the 94 dont, and you will have to cut and splice wires for the cam and crank sensors, as the 94 is 2 seperate units, and the 92 is 1

http://www.stealth316.com/2-cas_conversion.htm --- check this out if needing to change out a motor. This will fix the wiring issues of which the above post speaks. There is also two sensors on the neck of the thermostate housing(just below your coils). That you will also have to swap on some conversions.

not sure dandyou didnt mention it or if i missed it,, but in case he didnt make sure you do a full 120k mile maintenance on that engine before it ever goes in, including inspecting the main bearings,, actually expecially the main bearing as they are the number 1 failure point on these cars, as i suppose i dont need to tell you since you already have a spun bearing,, might even do that before you even buy the engine if you can so your not buying another spun bearing
