yes thats what i mean by cat. The egr valve controles the emisions. it is normally mounted by the carb and can be ran by vacume or electronic. 1997 I would say is vacume check for a vacume leak going to it. looks like a silver diaframe with a vacume hose hooked to it and 2 bolts holdint it in place

any time the engine lite flashes it is a miss fire could be a bad spark plug, plug wire,coil or cap and button

The man who came to look at it said it was partly my serpentine belt (which was very very shiny) and when I said the thing about the spark plug he checked it and said that it was part of the problem too. He has already fixed my truck for me. Thank you all again for your help!
