1997 Ford Explorer engine light blinking and rough idling

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer, that has suddenly started to idle very roughly, and the check
engine light, has started to flash. It's be steadily lit for the last 6 year, and never blinked
before. Today it has started to flash constantly. Also, when outside there is a smell
almost like burning rubber, but you can't smell it from inside the truck. Any suggestions
what this might be?

Thank you for your help! By cat do you mean a catalytic converter? and also what is an egr valve?
yes thats what i mean by cat. The egr valve controles the emisions. it is normally mounted by the carb and can be ran by vacume or electronic. 1997 I would say is vacume check for a vacume leak going to it. looks like a silver diaframe with a vacume hose hooked to it and 2 bolts holdint it in place
Thanks js I was not sure what it for but I do know what it does

any time the engine lite flashes it is a miss fire could be a bad spark plug, plug wire, coil or cap and button

Thank you so much for the help. The man who came to look at it said it was partly my serpentine belt (which was very very shiny) and when I said the thing about the spark plug he checked it and said that it was part of the problem too. He has already fixed my truck for me. Thank you all again for your help!
