I am buying a used 97 Explorer four door xlt and was wondering, if the transmission blew, what is the average cost to replace or rebuild?

You can usually get a rebuilt transmission installed in the $2500-3000 range including the transmission. A lot will depend on your area of the country and the going labor rates in your area. If you can find a good transmission in a junkyard your price would be lower.

unless the vehicle has trans problems now i would not buy if not dont borrow trouble,drive and enjoy it,
