Does anyone's 2019 Niro have trouble starting in cold weather?

Asked by GuruCDR87 Feb 03, 2019 at 05:40 PM about the 2019 Kia Niro LX FWD

Question type: General

Has anyone else had trouble starting the Niro in cold weather?
I purchased a 2019 KIA NIro on January 17th, 2019. On Thursday, January
31st, it was negative 5 degrees in PA. My Niro wouldn't start. It wouldn't start
the following day either even though the temperature was around 20
degrees. It still would not start after roadside assistance tried to jump start it.
(The radio and lights would still come on the entire time) It has since been
towed back to a KIA dealer. I only had the car a couple of weeks and now I'm
wondering if I'm going to have on-going problems?

I also have a 2019 Niro that was purchased on 12/4/18 On Saturday February 2,2019 it was -7 here also. The car would not start that morning. Roadside assistance was unable to start it. The radio and lights were still working Mine was towed to dealer. They are unable to receive the part they think might be the problem. It is on backorder We had previously owned a 2018 Niro that was totaled in a accident We drove that car for 22 thousand miles around the country with no problems. Not sure if its a cold weather issue or the 2019 is different then the 2018. I hope they are able to figure this out !

Same thing happened to me this morning. I have the Niro PHEV. Yesterday when the cold snap in a Denver started, my all-electric range was way lower, but it still started and ran in Hybrid mode. This morning, after plugging and charging all night, it wouldn’t start. Initially it said the key wasn’t present, then when I used the fob to actually push the start button it started system checks and then complained about the regenerative braking system, but I couldn’t turn on the heated seats, climate, or the screen in the center console (nav screen). I tried shutting it off and starting again and got the same result. I left and used a different car. Later that day the weather improved to the high teens or so, my wife tried to start it and nothing came on in the dash or otherwise. She plugged it back in, and waited an hour. Still nothing. It looks like I’ll need a tow.

Thank you for your responses. I had my Niro towed to the dealer near my house not the dealer I purchased it from. (54 miles away) They performed a scan tool test and found code "P1B77" They said they never saw this code before and it was a fluke. The code was for "Inverter Capacitor Precharging Fault." They opened a Techline case with KIA. They cleared the code and reset the system. This dealer said this had nothing to do with it not starting because it was cold outside and the original dealer never should have told me that. The car should start in cold weather. Had I known, I wouldn't have missed 2 1/2 days of work because the original dealer said it would start when the outside temperature warmed up! I hope none of us have anymore problems!

My car spent 6 days in the dealer. They said it was a faulty Power Relay Assembly. The part was changed and car working now. There is a recall on 2017 and 2018 Niro for that part. Something to do with overheating for the hybrid batteries located under the back seat. Hope this problem is behind us all

I'm having this same problem now. Car was in a parking lot in temps as low as -15 overnight, then wouldn't start the next morning even though the accessories all came on. Couldn't be jumped either. So now it's at a dealership. Problem for me is that I was 4 hours from home. Got a loaner but I'll have to drive 4 hours back and forth to pick up my car. Hopefully it's not to hard to fix, and hopefully the fix works...

MrDanillo - Are you talking about the Niro Hybrid, or Niro PHEV? My owners manual says the PHEV cannot be jump started, so if you’re talking about the PHEV I assume you’re saying that you didn’t even try to jumpstart it, not that you tried and failed.

@GuruCYZRL - Was your car a PHEV or only the Hybrid?

Update on my car: Dealer is baffled. Hope tomorrow they can make more progress troubleshooting.

My situation is playing out just like GuruCDR87. Dealership said it came back as a "Precharging Fault" and they cleared the code and the car started right up. They reported the issue to Kia and Kia said they were aware of the issue and that it's been popping up a bit. Hopefully they come up with a long-term solution and it's something that can be fixed. Until it is, I'm not going to be very confident taking this car on trips, especially in the cold. As it is I have an 8+ hour round trip on my hands to pick up the car.

Had it happen twice. If it gets too cold, the car becomes a brick and can only be reset by the dealership. Sounds like they will need a software fix Not sure why, in April, there is still not a fix. Hopefully they won't just ignore it, as those are the seeds from which class action lawsuits grow.

I think if it happens to me ever again I will have a chat with the mechanic or peek over their shoulder while they “fix” it. The cool thing about the Hybrid is that little button you all have that lets you put the car in jump start mode. The PHEV doesn’t have that button. Last time they told me they “jump started” it, but I didn’t ask about the exact procedure. The manual doesn’t cover it. If anyone knows how to jump start a Niro PHEV safely I’d love to hear about it.

I bought a Plug-In Hybrid last week with 15 miles on it. The temperature outside has been between 50F and 74F. It has already failed to start three times. I thought I was doing something wrong, but now I see that it's likely a defect. Thanks, everyone, for your information.

Does anyone else have a problem with the 2017 kia nero seats that feel like a spring is poking Me in the seat. The day I bought it I brought it back but they said no problem after 3 hrs in the shop, The springs are certainly punching Me in the rear but they refuse to replace or fix them.

On the left side of the steering wheel there is a button you push and hold for 5 seconds and then try starting your car. Also in all newer cars they are wired to the brake pedal so that relay on the brake may be defective we had that issue in our 2007 Nissan Altima Hybrid. So don't worry it just might be a defective little relay not to expensive to fix.

I have a problem with PHEV Niro as the petrol engine kicks in when the battery is fully charged

I start the car, go a few meters with the electric motor and then all of a sudden the petrol engine starts while the battery is fully charged. I have contacted my dealer and his answer was that it is "normal" and it is the computer that decides when to switch on the petrol engine. So, PHEW does not mean zero emission as even if you charge your battery every night, drive short distances and go at low speed, somehow the petrol engine will be used from time to time. With no obvious reason - that is what frustrates me most. I have invested in the special charging device at home about 1 700 EUR and was expecting that there would be no such thing for me as filling my tank with petrol (except long journey when going on holiday etc.) any more. That turns out not to be the case. And no solution has been provided by the dealer, claiming that this is "normal"...

I am taking my PHEV to my dealer tomorrow, which is a 38 mile drive. 2 days ago, my car started doing the same as yours, Guru. Scared the crap out of me . All of a sudden, my engine just revs big time in EV mode, then backs off a bit, but still eating gas, yet I am fully charged. Then after a while, it stops and I go back to my regular quiet electric. I only have 2300 miles...I am so ticked. I will not accept that this is normal and it never did it before yesterday.

GuruN99XD and khawknest, Sorry if this isn’t helpful, but I’m wondering if you know that the amount of pressure you put on the accelerator and the current speed of the car determine when the gas engine runs. On the dash you should have a power/charging gauge with a green area. Keep it in the green by using a light foot and keeping your speed under 100km/hr and the car should stay in EV mode. The other thing that can cause the gas engine to run is the cabin heater. Keep the heater off unless the temp is below 10C and just use the seat heater to keep you warm.

My car ended up towed to the dealer again Sunday evening. Tow driver did attempt to jump it using some terminals under the hood - no luck. All electronics were not functional. Couldn’t even open the lift gate because electronic locks were not working. Temperature overnight was not below freezing but was cold around 35F. Car had been on the charger for about 24 hours and had about 11mi electric range remaining when plugged in the evening prior. Had me baffled. Then the strangest news. Dealer got there in the morning, found the key fob in the drop box, and STARTED FOR THEM NO PROBLEM! When they called I explained the problem and they went back and forth with Kia corporate for a day. Then they tested the auxiliary battery and found a bad cell. Replaced the auxiliary battery (not the hybrid battery) and car seems fine the last few days. Fingers crossed...

Also, it does the same thing when I start the car after about 30 seconds, when I am just sitting in park. This is not normal, and I am not even touching the gas pedal!

I have had the no start issue happen half a dozen times so far but have always managed to sort it by either luck or most times recharging the main battery in my non plug in Kia Niro Hybrid. Its cold here in the UK today & my wife was nearly late for work but luckily have another car she could use. I will be phoning the Kia dealer shortly as they previously said they couldn't find any problem at the last service.

I have a kiro Niro also had some bother with not starting it has been in garage for two weeks now and it’s going to be an other week before Kia can send out a technical guy they do not know what’s wrong with it

II have a Niro. Is it acceptable to have gas in the oil? The oil dip stick shows it has more oil in it then when it was first changed. You can also smell the gas in the oil.

2019 Kia niro hybrid braking system problem. Every morning going to work but when I want to brake car going to random brake like stop and release ? Any guy have An idea please help me. Thanks

2019 Niro hybrid. Plugged into house garage outlet . Fully charged over night. Tried to remove hand held charger and would NOT release from car Plug. Called KIA dealer car purchased in Surprise Arizona. Service (only) suggestion, bring it in and we will see! I told service agent, I can't ! It is still plugged in! Read manual! Appeanantly, this happens as their is a Orange button Under the hood. It mentioned, pull the button up up to hear a click. That should release the charger so you can remove handle . The dealer was zero help! Going to Minnesota in January. Temperatures can go to minus 20 or 30! Their suggestion, don't go until we figure our why this is happening! Car designed in Korea. It gets very cold their in winter????
