would installing new spark plugs trigger the check engine light?

no...shouldn't but perhaps an electrical connector that got bumped in the process could....double check your footprints to see if somethin' got bumped~ You could always reset the trouble codes with one of these...and tell what's up with the bitch~

if you crossed the wires by mistake on two cylinders ,hell yes them brains measure where each piston is at any given time and expects the spark to light up when at tdc.!
