Nissan Altima 2005 3.5 SE has 'Service Engine Soon' light on and will hardly go when I accelerate.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I took my car to Auto Zone and the code came up as one cylinder not firing. My
husband wants me to take it to a Nissan service center to have it fixed and right
now we can't afford it. Can he just replace the spark plug on that one cylinder or
what?

There's a difference between a cylinder not firing and a spark plug not firing. If the cylinder is not firing, that means it's not working. On a 4 cylinder car, that means you lose 25% of engine power, for example. It's not necessary to take it to a dealership. You might want to check the Yelp app on your smartphone for a good, local auto repair shop. You'll likely save money going that route. If you can't afford a repair right now, the car will still run but it's performance and gas mileage will suffer. I know it's not ideal, but you can make payments over time if you charge the repair to a credit card. Just a thought. Best wishes.

Thank you for you answer. My husband knows how to work on it but will not do it. It does still run but uses alot of gas but no power sometimes. I can't use the air conditioner either...the engine just loses power.

V6 3.5 change the spark plug.. BUT really its the ignition coil on the number one cylinder like the code detected injectors rarely have issues. Replace the coil on the spark plug or better yet change them all(6)approx $75 total
