How to quiet lifter tapping on 05 Nissan Quest?

Asked by 05Quester Jul 15, 2014 at 06:09 PM about the 2005 Nissan Quest 3.5 SL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 05 Quest has a loud tapping noise from the engine compartment.  The noise does not stop until the engine is off.  Multiple visits to various Nissan and independent repair shops all point to faulty lifters.  These mechanics concluded that maybe the oil pressure wasn’t high enough for the lifters to function properly.   The van has 115K miles.  I tried the following:
1)  Lucas oil treatment which worked to quiet the tapping only momentarily
2)  Seafoam as an oil additive to no effect.

At this point I’m skeptical about using any other additives.

So what has worked on other Nissan Quests?

You can dump all the chemicals you want to it. But you are only putting on a band-aid. The only fix is to get new lifters and possibly a new pump. I don't know if they even make Slick 50 anymore. You could always try Murphys Mystery Oil.

I would have someone put a gauge on that engine so you have an accurate oil pressure reading. Until that is done everything else is an opinion. the way to solve these types of problems is to do it methodically, not a shotgun approach. Proper testing allows you to make informed decisions.

Your problem sounds like the timing chain guide has slipped down and the chain tensioner has extended. This causes slack in the chain which in turn causes the chain to "slap" inside. Sounds very similar to bad lifters. I have an 04 quest that was doing the same thing.
