Overheating

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My car started overheating yesterday went all the way to the H. There was no steam or leaks. I followed instruction manual turning heat to max and fan to max along with idling 1500 r/min til it returned to normal. After letting it cool for couple hours added filtered water waited more than an hour added more watered. I was able to drive home more than 40 miles away with heat and fan at max without it overheating again. My car has been parked since I got it home. I took the bus to work What could have caused this incident? Am I able to continue driving it? What should I do?

Was the coolant low? If it was it has to have gone somewhere. Pull oil distick see if theres signs of a blown head gasket. Also could be anythng from cooling fan not turning on to thermostat sticking closed. I would say try to figure out where the coolant is going cause countinuous overheating will cause further damage!

my 2004 Xterra over heats when the ac is on and im driving in the city. But it works fine and dont over heat when im on the high way. Do you know Why?
Remove your thermostat and drive it. if that’s not problem do a compression it’s not hard (google it) remove each spare plug and check for coolant or water whatever you put in the radiator. Check for leaks.
I have a 2001 nissan xterra.it starts right away but when I run it and park it.I have to wait til it cools before it starts again
