2002 Nissan Maxima GLE Sputters

Asked by mightygrid Oct 05, 2018 at 06:44 PM about the 2002 Nissan Maxima GLE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2002 Nissan GLE automatic periodically sputters slightly at take off.  The
light reads "Service Engine Soon".  I'm going to have a Mechanic take a look.
Meanwhile, I want to ask here so that I can be better educated before
Mechanic provides his diagnosis.  I've seen this question asked before but
not recently.  I hadn't noticed a difinitive answer whether the different advice
solved the problem for folks back then? Or maybe more folks have
experienced this recentlt, leading to better chance to hear more recent
solutions?
Thank you in advance.

A mechanic will hook up a diagnostic to your car and get the engine codes on your service engine light. Whatever the trouble codes are should tell him what to fix. As far as educating on this, there are multiple possibilities of what's causing the car to sputter, could be spark plugs, timing, low fuel pressure, etc. But the trouble codes will tell for sure the exact problem. If you'd like to, before taking it to a shop, you can go to AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts and they can hook up a diagnostic to your car for free and you can find out what the codes are before going to shop and possibly avoid a diagnostic fee.
