dashboard lights killed my battery?

a couple of days ago I got an emmision test done which was ok, later that
night I turned my car off pulled the key out and noticed that some(not all) of
the dashboard lights were still on, I didn't thint much of it so I went to bed the
next day I go outside to leave somewhere and the car is dead completely so I
immediately suspect the battery and the lights, I had a friend come over to
jump me off but when he did smoke starting bleeding through the seams of
the dashboard near the steering wheel so I had him unplug the jumper cables
completely and I just left it alone until now

Sound,s like your igintion wires, may have burned up,
Yes,it would be like the ignition was left on.
How much would it cost to replace? and what causes the ignition wires to burn up?
I would think,if it happened after the emission test,it was something they did,but that would be a guess,did they use the diagnostic connector in the car?You may have to just replace the wiring,it should not run maybe 200 dollars.
All I know is the place hooked the car up to the machine and the only thing that failed was the catalytic converter which I'm getting replaced but the said that the most they did was crank the car and didn't even mess with the dashboard, but I'm reading some other websites and it's saying stuff about the spark plugs Are they a problem too?
No spark plug,s would not cause this,but they did connect to the connector,and it is tied in to the igition.
So the spark plugs aren't a problem? What gives it away that it's the ignition wires?
Since my battery was purchased in 2011 and is dead now do I have to purchase a new battery?
Smoke coming from steering column,would be first sign of igintion wire,s be bad,the battery problem is where the wires are bad is causing the drain,find the burnt wire,s and you will have found your issue.
