Sudden Acceleration

Asked by AllysonUK Sep 18, 2013 at 10:14 AM about the 2000 Nissan Frontier 4 Dr SE 4WD Crew Cab SB

Question type: General

In April, my mother got into our Nissan Frontier, which was parked at a supermarket
parking lot and ended up in a collision with 2 parked vehicles! Her story of events were
that the car would not start initially and then when it did and she pressed on the
accelerator, it leapt forward and would not stop - she is adamant that she was pressing
on the brakes so hard to try and stop the car but the only thing that did eventually stop
it was when it hit another parked car, which in turn hit one more parked car! The
Frontier was a write off, the airbag had inflated, but luckily there were no serious
injuries. When my husband was speaking with the policeman, he said he reckoned she
had mistaken the brake for the gas pedal but she swears that the vehicle went off so
quickly and really it all happened so fast she can't really recall but her foot was very
bruised from apparently trying to press the brake pedal so hard.  My question is, who is
likely to be more correct, the policeman or my mother?  This has become a slight
elephant in the room and you can imagine the jokes my husband now tells that his
mother-in-law wrote his vehicle off, but at the same time I really want to know what the
real reason for this accident could have been and whether it actually could have been a
sudden acceleration incident or whether that is not possible when one first drives off
from a parked position? We really just want to solve this little mystery, not least to
draw a line under the event and move on with things! Many thanks, Allyson

My grandmother drove through the big window at the Post Office and swore to her dying day she had her foot on the brake, A thorough investigation revealed no mechanical problems with her car. Not an accusation your Mom is mistaken. Just what happened in my family. She had her foot on the gas, and was convinced was on brake.

Thank you for your responses - I also feel it is time to move on and as you say we will never know but I thought I would take a stab and see whether there was ever a particular issue with sudden acceleration in Frontiers, but to be honest I do think this was down to human error as we had the vehicle for so long and never had a problem with it....David, it is interesting about your grandmother and thank you for sharing...in my heart I know this is what happened with my mom but we will have to just let everything be....and yes, as you say nobody was hurt which is such a relief- it could have been much worse and it is only a car at the end of the day...thanks again!

You got it right...cars can be replaced. Mom Can't. That's why we pay through the nose for insurance.

Well, my mother was driving a 2009 Nissan Rogue and states she was driving along and the car accelerated- she had to use the emergency brake. I had the car towed to Auto nation Nissan dealership, the mechanic states that 0 codes were on and they could not find a problem but he would keep it overnight and drive it cold tomorrow. Well today he called and the car did accelerate and the problem is an air pressure problem, they will have to blow out some tube. I believe this happens more than the car companies will own up to. I'm just grateful that we had a mechanic that listened. I will sell it--its a 2009 Nissan Rogue with only 29,000 miles and has never missed scheduled maintenance at the dealership.

http://www.nissanusa.com/apps/contactus I purchased a 2004 Xterra 2 years ago for my son and his daughter (2 years old) to use. It has repeatedly had a problem of SUDDEN UNWANTED ACCELERATION. Last night it did it again on I-75. It was going past 90 MPH when he called me in a panic. I told him to put it in neutral and then apply the brakes. He did this. When we got there I started it up and it was still at a ridiculous high RPM. Like it was stuck wide open. I had it towed to the garage. It's a miracle he and his daughter wasn't killed and/seriously injured. I am extremely upset with this situation and expect Nissan to do something about this problem.

I suspect that 99.999 percent of "I stepped on the brake and the car jumped forward" are driver error. Unless the car has drive by wire this condition is pretty much impossible.

We have just bought a 2015 4WD Nissan Frontier From a dealer. We are having a acceleration probem. We can be driving down the road and the truck will speed up even when you are not pressing the acceleration pedel

I came here looking for answers to this problem, in my situation I was pulling into a parking place at my work with my 2004 Nissan Frontier, I was almost stopped with my foot on the brake when it suddenly accelerated with tires squealing because I was mashing on the brake, it jumped the curb and went onto the sidewalk, then just went to an idle, I convinced myself that my big foot had to have been contacting the gas pedal even though it looked impossible to me. Then about 3 months later I pulled up to a stoplight and came to a complete stop(no one in front of me.) and the same thing happened, I again tried to see how I could possibly happen by accident and have come to the conclusion that it could not. I took it to my mechanic and we took it for a drive, and while he was driving at a steady speed it accelerated and decelerated three times. We can get no codes what so ever. So those of you with this problem are in my estimation not crazy. We are looking for an answer, as it is I am not to wild about driving this truck.

Driving my 2015 Rogue on Pa turnpike. Speed limit was 70 so I was doing that. Out of no where the car started to accelerate. Checked the cruise control it was not on applied the brake would not stop the accelerate. Slammed the gas peddle to see if it was stuck nothing. Had to drive the car at about 80 miles a hour with foot on brake till it was safe to pull over put car in neutral . In neutral motor revved and squealed like I was flooring it. Turned it off engine light on tried to restart nothing . Waited for AAA to tow tried to start again same thing revved full throttle. Still no answer from Nissan. Thank god we weren't killed on the Pa Turnpike. My grandson had been driving and I took over in Allentown. A young driver would have panicked. Calling Nissan corporate and Selling the car as soon as I get it back.

My wife just had similar problem: her 2010 Altima accelerated on a parking lot, jumped a grass divider and crashed into another parked car. She is a very careful driver and the way she described it does sound like a problem with her car. I am sure it would be impossible to get Nissan to do proper testing though. Any suggestions?

i am very happy to hear that some one else had the same problem, because it happend to me. i own a 2009 nissan frontier. the first it happend, i was on the freeway, and i assumed that maybe i invertenly pushed the accelerator, but i didn't feel it. the next time it happend, i was sure my foot was on the brake. yesterday i was turning into a parking space, and it happend , i looked at my foot, it was on the brake, and it was still happening. i was pushing the brake very hard, but it continued happening. i call the dealer to see wheather there was a recall, but they said no. i have an appointment tomorrow for a dignostic evaluation, but i am reluctant to take it, because i have a feeling they won't find anything. i am lost....

I was stopped at a red light with my foot on the brake in a 2006 Frontier,, and then suddenly, the truck accelerated and hit the car in front of me. I am a very careful, and defensive driver, and I was not sleepy, or looking at a cell phone, or otherwise distracted, so what can I do to get Nissan to take some responsibility? Luckily, no one was hurt.

Same thing happened to me in my 06 Frontier. No one believes me, they say because of my age (81) I hit the wrong peddle. I was in my driveway backing out with no foot on any peddle when it took off. I hit the brake hard but the thing that stopped me was the neighbors bushes.

I was pulling into a parking spot at a DSW and there was a brick wall infront of me and as I pulled in we came to a stop and all of a sudden my 2011 Nissan frontier went flying forward into the brick wall and wouldn't stop, tires were still moving forward when my foot wasn't on any of the pedals. I quickly threw the truck into park and because the airbags went off there was smoke everywhere and I yelled at my friend to get out of the truck. someone that saw the whole this said that the truck went from a complete stop to full on acceleration mode right into a brick wall. The only way to make it stop was to throw it into park and shut the truck off.

2015 Nissan Frontier. Cruise control on and engaged. Stepped on accelerator to pass someone and the truck kept accelerating when I removed my foot from the pedal. Stepping on brake allowed it to slow down but immediately accelerated again when I removed my foot. Tried turning off cruise control but was unable, Maybe I didn't hold button long enough, but second step on brake and everything returned to normal. Happened a second time with cruise control on but not engaged. One step on the brake and it recovered.

I had the same issue with my 2010 Frontier (twice no damage, no injuries). Now it has happened again with new 2019 Frontier. This has happened too often with too many Nissan vehicles to always have been driver error. We own 4 cars, and this has only happened with the Frontier. I am no hitting the accelerator accidentally. It's going back to the dealer to be checked. Something is not right.

On my ride to the dealership this morning to have regular maintenance on my husbands 2015 Frontier - I was at a red light and when I let up off the brake the truck just excelerated on its own - if I had not instantly slammed on my brake I would have hit the truck in front of me - I was shaking because that has never happened to me before - I asked the dealer if anyone has ever complained about this and he looked st me like I was crazy - I have been driving for years so I know I am not wrong about what happened....

Allison, happened to me too in a 2013 Subaru Forester. Fail mileage 31K. I also was firmly stopped and waiting to right turn when vehicle self accelerated, jumped the curb, up an earth bern, took out shrubs and trees, coming to rest on the fender of a parked ford. No one believed me--cops mocked me--witness told cop "firmly stopped and acceleration from 0 to 60". Cop omitted witness statement from his report but did note the CCV backed up my statement. I could not drive the car and sold it back to dealer after telling them car had self-accelerated; they resold it. Show room condition so dealer was DElighted to have it on the lot. I have not driven in 7 months-- all models are reported with this fail.

My husband has a 2010 Nissan Frontier, and just recently, twice while he was parking the truck in front of our house (between parked cars), the truck accelerated so quickly and without warning, the tires burned rubber right there. Both times this scared the Hell out of us. My husband had to use all of his weight pressing on the brake, and turn the truck off. This is extremely frightening, and Nissan should be fixing this problem whatever it is.

I have a 2012 Nissan 4x4 Frontier. Today Saturday October 24, 2020 a Sudden Acceleration happened with this truck again. This is about the 6 to 8th time this has happened. Today it took off like if the speed control came on . I was lucky to put the brakes on in time to stop truck before hitting another vehicle in the Home Depot parking lot. Nissan needs to admit this is their problem. NOT drivers error

Hi to you all. My name is Mr. José Nieves. I'm an accident reconstructionist in Puerto Rico. For the past 32 years, I have been involved in quite a few investigations on vehicle accidents What troubles me is in the past 10 years approximately I have been involved with about 6 to 8 sudden acceleration cases. The common facts are that all are Japanese or European vehicles and all of them were driving close to high electric cables poles or close to repetitious antennas. This sent me on a quest to see if this influence the reason for the sudden acceleration issue. It has been already proven that high-intensity cables produce electromagnetic and radio frequency interference and this interference produces even cancer on people when exposed for long periods. All this electronic equipment is receiving information or commands from other equipment that if the signal is compatible with a command it could trigger the vehicle to accelerate or open an airbag or who knows what else. Each manufacturer is responsible for their test on their vehicles and is my understanding they are not using all the protocols in need to deliver a safe vehicle. By the way, the same thing is happening in Europe with American vehicles. This makes me think that the radio frequencies used in the US are compatible with radio frequencies used on European and Japanese vehicle instrumentation and vice versa in Europe. This situation is also been more common in modern vehicles than on older vehicles that had a cable for acceleration and not modern drive-by-wire systems that are electronic. The situation with this system is that when you check the Black box of the vehicle the results will be the accelerator was depressed of course it had the order to accelerate and that is what the computer recorded, but also the dash lights were all on in most cases and the wrong airbag deployed, or no airbag deployed at all. We are driving Jack boxes and you won't know when the joker will jump.
