toyota camry 2017 oil pressure sensor How to Test

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the oil pressure sensor because of a leak. There is no dedicated low oil pressure trouble light. If there is low pressure the general master trouble light is supposed to light and an oil error displayed on the central dashboard screen. But how to test that the sensor is working correctly? Unplugging the sensor does not cause a fault.

The sensor looks like a conventional oil pressure switch that completes the circuit to ground when there's little or no oil pressure to turn the light on. When installing this type of sensor you do not use any kind of sealant on the threads. Using sealant will insulate the sensor from ground and prevent the light from coming on. To test the sensor, unplug it and use a 12 volt DC test light. Connect one side of your test light to the positive 12 volt battery and the other end, with the engine off, to the sensor terminal. Your light should come on. If it doesn't, either the sensor is defective or there's sealant on the threads. Now start the engine and do the same test. With the engine running your test light should not come on, assuming you have good oil pressure. Jim

Jim, The sensor checks OK, To test the computer's fault system, I unplugged the connector to the sensor. While unplugged, and the engine running shouldn't the system recognize a fault?

You're welcome, glad to help. With the engine running I wouldn't think so because the computer expects there to be oil pressure so no ground on the circuit. Try grounding the wire that plugs onto the sensor with the engine running. The light and message should come on. Jim
