Loud squeal when reverse and wheel turned/not so loud metal scraping when moving

Asked by Chris Jun 16, 2020 at 02:59 PM about the 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 09 Civic Hybrid that's around 92k miles that makes a kind of metal
scraping light (audible) sound from behind the front left (drivers) wheel but only
when the car is in motion. The sound goes away when I step on the brakes.
When I put the car into reverse and turn the wheel the sound changes to a very
loud squealing sound and goes away if I stop moving or straighten the wheel,
goes back to the sound mentioned above.

I removed the wheel and checked under the car from what I can tell everything
is fairly tight.
The brake pads may be getting close to needing to be replaced. The rotors
look good, no signs of excessive wear.
The boots I could find all look good, no cracks and still flex just fine, not dry.
I shook a few of the parts there like the sway bar and links and what not,
everything feels relatively tight.

Any idea what could be causing this or what to look at? The car is so old I
don't want to put a lot of money into it. I'm think of replacing the brake pads
as it could be causing the problem of the metal scraping per other things I
have read.

Thank you in advance for any assistance and/or ideas!

The Pads might be so worn down that the rivets are contacting the rotors. Did you check the dust shield? That might be contacting the back side of the rotor.

I saw a few mm only and the rotor looked good. I was ordering brake pads to replace it. I also did not check the dust shield, I'll check that when I replace the pads.

i also would suggest changing the pads and seeing if the sounds still occurs it could some sort of squealer indicator to let you know so you dont wear out your rotors
