When cranking car makes funny noise

I HAVE A 1999 NISSAN PATHFINDER I
SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING IS BROKEN
ONLY MAKES THE NOISE WHEN I CRANK IT
AND CUTS IT OFF

was it running fine just before it happened or has it been giving you trouble? could be bad stuff internally, or maybe timing belt/chain

Im afraid you are going to have someone professional listen to it. bit hard to diagnose on here. but a timing belt or chain can do what you are describing.

FINALLY GOT SOMEONE TO LOOK AT IT SAID IT WAS. The fan crank. .IS THAT EXPENSIV? ???

a fan pulley shouldn't be too bad. I am not sure on that model what it looks like in there, but if you got by with something external, it shouldn't be too bad.
