68' Impala Dash Cluster Wiring.

Asked by Tom May 27, 2024 at 04:46 PM about the 1968 Chevrolet Impala SS 2 Door Hardtop Coupe

Question type: General

I have a 1968 impala and had to replace the wiring. I got a harness from
painless performance.  In the instrument panel section they list a orange\Black
wire the list as "Accessory Power (Switched) But my 12 pin plus doe snot have
an orange and black wire. I have attached photos of the plug and the Painless
guide. Thanks in advance to anyone who has a suggestion.

I think a basic understanding of the circuits/electronics is required , If you expect plug & play you may be disappointed , One thing that may throw you off is the idiot light wiring with 2 positives , plus any diodes , The light is on with key on engine off but when the alternator kicks in they go off , Do you have a multi tester ?

The best course of action is to get a factory shop manual for your Impala. This will have the correct wiring and colors for those wires. As years go by things get lost and lumped together. So what you may be looking at, for example, is a generic set of instructions for, say 1967 through 1972 models. Try Faxon Auto Literature in Riverside, CA for a reprint or ebay for a good used one. Faxon has very good quality and prices. Jim
