Upgrading '95 300zx for improved horsepower and performance.

Question type: Car Customization
I just bought a '95 300zx STD Coupe. I am looking to possibly upgrade the engine, exhaust, wheels and tires all for performance improvement reasons. I know that the TT Engines can be easily had for that year from JDM and similar sources (including many on eBay). I was wondering what other engines easily fit into these cars without too much hasstle. For example, can one get the '95 GTR or Infiniti engines to fit into this car for more output easily. I am looking to maintain it as a 5 speed. Also, besides the engine; what other modifications do people recommend to get the most horsepower from the car.

You can put the RB20det, RB25det, RB26dett. The RB26 is most common and you would use the RB25 5 speed rwd tranny for that swap. Wiring is done quite simple by these guys: http://www.wiringspecialties.com/r3rbinz3cose.html
Beef up your drivelines: drive shaft, cv axles, limited slip diff, and custom final drive gear. Since the car is heavy, remove as much weight from the car so it can move faster. Get carbon hood, carbon doors, and carbon hatch. Get light weight wheels. Beef up the brakes a bit.
you can fit a wide range of engines into your 300, the biggest issue is cost, what are you willing to spend and what do you want in the end? any engine swap will require a whole new engine harness/ecu, if you want to keep the 5 speed thats in the car, stick with a nissan VG/VH or i do believe the VQ will bolt up. the guys at Z1 motorsports can swap a TT motor for around 9000. most other engine swaps can cost around the same with buying a new engine and all the parts to make it work, depending on how cheap you can find things. just an upgraded aluminum driveshaft is fine cv axels can handle a lot of abuse, and these cars come stock with a LSD, you can buy an upgraded one, but not an issue until your around 600-700 horsepower dont bother with a carbon fiber hood as it is about the same weight as the stock hood anyway and cost like 3x more, and i wouldnt bother wasting money on all the carbon fiber parts, in my honest opinion they look way too rice for these beautiful streamlined vehicles. are you trying to make a race car or just beef it up a little? honesly a TT motor with a few mods running at about 500 horse to the wheels is a beastly car and so much fun to drive. my TT is at about 350 and i love every second of it, its a heavy car, but besides stripping it down to nothing, you may only kill a couple hundred pounds and it really isnt worth it if its a daily driver, these cars handles great and has great accel and torque for such a heavy car, just upgrade the suspension parts into modern day coilovers, stiffer swaybars, adjustable control arms. as for wheels, try to stick with name brand wheels as they are generally of a better stronger build quality and arent too heavy, try not to get anything over an 18 inch. you can do pretty much anything you can imagine to your car, its just about what kind of cash your willing to spend and whats the end result that you want. id find a local performance shop that does customizations and have a sit down with someone there.
k, the engine swap is $9,000 (that is thousand). That seems a little pricey. I am hoping you meant $900. I know the engine itself can be had for less than 2k for same model year TT engine. I am not looking to have anything with 1200 hp or anything like that. But would love something around 500 hp. I am looking at engine swap to the TT version, tires/wheels, and possibly exhaust. Not lookint to spend 10K; but 5 or 6. Thanks allot for the suggestions. I will start saving up and looking at different options. T
well the problem is that yes you may be able to find an engine for $2000, but thats usually for a stock TT motor thats seen a hard life, and unfortunately you need a whole TT front clip to swap it into an NA because the radiator wont work with the intercooler piping unless its a TT radiator, im sorry to say, but unless you have some good connections 5-6 thousand to get about 500 horse to the weels is a tough call. at 500 horse the stock internals, strong as they may be, take a serious beating and you should really have forged. for your power goals youd be better off selling your car and buying a TT, if you get lucky you can find one fairly inexpensive, but it will still need some love. 500 horse requires at least bigger turbos ($2000) and larger injectos ($1000) youd want forged internals for safety ($2000) you need a boost gauge and a quality boost controller ($25-$1000) downpipes ($250-$500) testpipes or high flow cats ($250-$500) and a decent cat back exhaust ($500-$1000) not to mention a tuned ECU ($250-$700) it adds up really quick. if you want high horsepower and little cost, buy a honda civic and turbo it, but its no where NEAR in the same as a 300z

sorry, for turbos i ment ($2000-$4000) depending on size and brand you need a dual intake setup with the sellin maf translator($400-$1000) you will need a performance clutch, id go with a multi plate because they can take the abuse a 3000 pound car can throw at it($500-$3000) and never EVER put a used turbo engine in your car without rebuilding it first! i have heard wayyyyyy too many horror stories. keep in mind, all these prices i have given you are approximate and none of them include labor to put them in, so add an extra $5000 or so unless you can do this all yourself im not trying to be harsh, just letting you know what your in for
K, thank you all so much for the info. I am going to start saving and hopefully be able to afford some of the Z1sports upgrades. I really would love for this thing to scream. T
Hi , anyone still read this topic ? I got a 91 na m/t . Buy it before do some research. I know engine bay really small. How much if i swap 2jzgte on it. Is it cost much ? I just want around below 400hp because i gonna drive it daily. Or just keep saving to swap tt on it ? What is more reliable?
