Engine noise on new Accord Hybrid
Asked by Rob Nov 20, 2020 at 10:01 AM about the 2020 Honda Accord 2.0T EX-L FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hello
I recently purchased a new 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid. I have noticed a
pretty loud humming noise coming from the left front side of the car when I
am driving between 50 and 55mph. It gets loud for 5 - 10 seconds then goes
away and repeats when I am in that mph range. It also looks like the battery
is charging at this time as well.
The dealer service shop said this is normal, but I did not hear this when I test
drove the car. Is this normal? If not, any idea what it could be or how to get
it fixed if the service department says it is normal?

I have the same exact car, and same exact issue. I am looking for an answer myself, and came across this possible cause: "The only notable change for the 2020 Honda Accord is an updated Acoustic Vehicle Alert System, which is the monotone hum the car makes when it’s cruising in EV mode. This dull humming sound helps inattentive pedestrians and vision-impaired people, who would otherwise rely on the noise from an engine, know there is a car coming toward them."

I have the exact same problem. It gets so loud sometimes that it is deafening and then will suddenly stop. My dealer service dept said Honda was unaware of the problem. The service tech drove another one on their lot and it did the same thing but started at a slower speed. Mine is 52-54 mph. Honda says since they are unaware of a problem, there is no problem.

I purchased a hybrid ex-l last week and have the exact same issue. It happens when crusing between 50-55 mph. Dealer fixed something with ANC but hasn't helped yet. Will be taking to the dealer again. Pls update if anyone is able to find a fix for this. Its pretty annoying.

My 2020 hybrid does the same thing between 50-55 mph. Car now has 3,500 miles on it and the frequency of the sound seems to be increasing, Seems to be coming from the left front side of the vehicle.
After doing some digging, it seems this noise is related to the noise cancelling system and goes away if you crack a window as that shots the ANC off. That being said, Honda does not seem to have a fix for the problem.

Hi, My 2020 Accord Hybrid Touring does the exact same thing and you are all experiencing. The other day, the humming was almost deafening. Had never been that loud before. Unfortunately it doesn't happen every time I reach 53 MPH but enough to be a nuisance. I was told by my Honda service advisor (when I went in for the 2 recalls) that he was aware of it, but since Honda has not issued any kind of service bulletin there was nothing that he could do about it. He recommended that I call Honda America (800 999-1009) and register this issue with him. So in my opinion, I was doing his job, but called them and put it on record. I mentioned that I had seen this thread and another where people with vehicles as old as 2018 had the same issue, so I find it difficult to believe that they have never heard about it. This is my first Honda, came over from a Chevy and I am not impressed so far.
I owned a 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid drove 55,000 miles and I never experienced this humming noise and I never had any problems with that car - drive like a charm. Then I traded it in for a new 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid (same model) and the new one started around 2,500 miles to make this humming annoying noise. I realize right away that the sound is not normal because I repeat I never heard that while driving my 2018 Accord Hybrid. It’s definitely something different with my 2020 car.
I have the same issue. I have a 2020 Accord Hybrid Touring and get the loud noise at similar speeds as mentioned in the prior posts (48-53 mph). I have less than 1000 miles. Mine seems to happen more frequently going up and down rolling hills. It's a separate sound from the general engine noise of acceleration.

Call Honda Customer care at 800-999-1009. They will hear your complaint and start a case file. I called yesterday and a case representative called me today to discuss that plus several other issues I have with my Accord hybrid. Once you have a case rep you will talk to the same person every time you call. That is the good thing. She seemed genuinely concerned and indicated that she would do every thing possible to get a resolution. We will see what happens.
I also have a 2018 Honda Accord hybrid , 29k miles, doing this same thing. It started last year and I believe it’s related to an update to the system by Honda. It’s never done that before. Low hum while engine is at power/charge area regardless of speed. It has now turned into a loud volume him for about 5 one then stops. But, it fluctuates in volume when it’s loud.

Update on Honda customer service. So, the rep actually ended up not doing anything but call the dealer service department, talk to them, and then call me back and tell me the same thing I already new. She repeated to me what the service department had already told me. The more noise you all make about this, no pun intended, the more likely we are to get a fix. She closed my case with a statement that the car is functioning as intended. However, returned the car to my dealer and suddenly there is an information bulletin on this issue now. They replaced the mic array on the ANC system as this was supposed to fix the problem. The noise comes from the drivers side lower door speaker. I discovered that I do feel vibration in the speaker when the noise occurs. Replacing the mic array did not fix the problem. Took it back again. Now they are saying that Honda is working on a software fix for the ANC brain. When I talked to my case rep, there was never any acknowledgement of this. If she had told me this, I might not have been so mad that she was closing my case with no apparent resolution. The service dept did tell me that after the software update comes out, if that does not fix the noise, they will replace the entire ANC system, or whatever. We will see. Please bark up Honda's customer service tree!

I also have this issue. Took two days and Honda found nothing. I showed them video on car gurus.com after two days of my car being there and they called their master tech and he knew all about it. He said it’s a glitch in software with the ANC and engineers are working on it. It happens when it’s cold out and going about 55 mph. Corporate Honda said they knew nothing so I called them back. They obviously have been working on this tw years as mine is a 2020 and happened right after my recall and software update. My car is a 2020 I bought in August and only has 465 miles on it. They don’t know if or when they’ll have a fix. The hum gets so loud it’s like a tuning fork pitch and very deafening and it sounds like a Mac truck is coming and gonna hit you when it starts. Someone is gonna have an accident because it’s very scary when happens, especially when it’s dark out, it stops after about 20 min of driving and it’s loud enough to cause hearing damage. I reported to not nhtsa.gov call in your safety complaint to 1-888-327-4236 as Honda is brushing off as cosmetic but it’s much more than this and it’s gonna cause a wreck.

My car doing the same and after three times to the dealership and mic changes still happens. And now my dealership states it is operating a intended. Maybe if there is a class action lawsuit then something will get done!
I have a 2019 Accord Hybrid EX-L and have been experiencing this noise since I purchased it in Nov 2019. It now has over 11k miles. It happens when it's cold and I'm going around 50 mph. It seems to come from the front, driver's side. Sometimes it's so bad, it feels like the car is going to vibrate apart.
I’m having the same issue with my 2020 Accord Hybrid EX-L. Around 50 mph or so and the sound happens for about 15 seconds then goes away. I haven’t brought it to the dealer yet about this or called Honda Corporate, but I will. Hopefully this gets resolved for all of us.

I called nhtsa.gov 888-327-4236 today and registered my complaint. I don't know if it will do any good or not, but it does not appear as though Honda is being very responsive. My dealership is only doing what they can as directed by Honda. The other day the humming got so loud I thought the speaker would blow. It did go away as soon as I cracked my driver side window.
I have the base 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid and I get this noise as well. I have done a lot of testing on this noise to see when it will actually come up and here's what I found. This noise will occur between 53-57 mph and does not occur when it is running purely on the electric motor but rather only appears when you are running the gasoline engine. I have contacted Honda and went into the dealer for this issue many times and its the same story as all the other comments of them denying any issue. Here's a video that shows it, noise starts around 0:17 seconds and ends around 0:32 seconds (https://youtu.be/qSvgZQV34fw). It also appears that this noise also occurs at lower speeds but dissipates very quickly so its not noticeable. I believe I heard it somewhere in the 30 mph range but you usually accelerate out of that speed pretty quickly so it doesn't have time to pick up like the 55 mph noise.

I have a 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid EX-L. A loud howling noise often occurs when maintaining a steady speed between 50 - 55 mph. Sound instantly disappears when changing speed. Dealer replaced something on the exhaust but that didn't help. They have been unable to find a solution.

I have a 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid EX-L i purchased in Sep 2020 and i've been having the same humming issue. I'm calling corporate now to file a complaint. Hopefully we all get our cars fixed for free.

I also have a 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid and get that same hum as everyone else. I bought it from Boch Honda in Massachusetts.
Beachexotic03 answered 3 years ago
I also experience the same thing. I took it to the dealer they thought it was a wheel bearing but I am 100% sure that it’s coming from the transmission in between shifting between gears right around 50 and 53 miles an hour
Guru9TCYCY answered 3 years ago
I have a 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid and experience the same growing humming noise. Question for you, I have the power flow on the infotainment and began to notice that when the gear icon appears the humming begins and can grow depending on how long the gear is present. When looking up the gear it is when the engine engages to supply power to the wheels and the car is no monger being propelled by the batteries or the engine generator. Anyone else made this observation?
Yes I also made this observation if you scroll up and look check my comment.
Beachexotic03 answered 3 years ago
Yes I have bad this observation myself, which leads me to believe it is something with the VVT, in between gears and shifting, the hum is consistently at 53mph for me, as soon as I hit the Excelerator, the noise goes away, as soon as the car is at lower speeds or also goes away. I doubt it is a software issue; I believe maybe a bad synchromesh in the transmissions, produced by Honda. I’m not even sure Honda is aware of the issues
Beachexotic03 answered 3 years ago
I say we start a mass, complain to Honda directly, I bought my car new and the problem started at 8000k miles, mine is 2020 hybrid touring
Guru9T2BXZ answered 3 years ago
Mine was making the same noise around 50-55 MPH, went from normal to ECO mode and haven't heard it since. This is NOT a solution, but it may help a few that the noise really drives them crazy. 2020 Accord EX-L with 17K miles

Hi All - have the solution... (really! -- at least for my vehicle) I've been following this thread - I have a Honda Accord Hybrid 2020 (EXL) - - loved everything about the car except had the loud humming that came in intermittently at around 50-55mph -- you could stop it if you opened the window... reported the problem to my dealership service center here (Manly Honda in Santa Rosa, CA) back in Jan 2021 -- they also tried to replace ANC - no good.... finally they said they needed to replace the ANC - but with the 2021 part not the 2020... however - it has taken until now to be able to get the new part !! (delay due to world backlog of supply chain parts).. They put it in just today -- of course under warranty - noise is gone!!!
Guru9B8X4H answered 3 years ago
Follow up to my answer from 2 days ago (Honda Accord Hybrid EXL 2020 - loud hum at speeds 50-55mph) - not only did the fix work to get rid of the hum (changing the ANC - active noise cancellation - with the 2021 part, not the 2020) -- the car is actually quieter at all speeds - so I'm pretty sure something was defective with these 2020 ANC systems. The recommendation to swap the whole system for the 2021 came from Honda itself when my service department reached out to them (after having replaced the mics and having replaced the ANC with the 2020 part).

I have a 2020 Accord Hybrid with the loud humming noise which occurs between 50-55 MPH AND the engine is engaged. When it drops back to the electric motor only the noise stops. I have not tried opening the window to see if that has any effect. I also detect the noise around 30-32 MPH but that is a speed that is harder to maintain in normal driving for me. The solution mentioned by Guru9B8x4H abut replacing the ANC with a 2021 version sounds promising. Here's hoping that it works for the rest of us to solve this problem.
Guru9CNRB4 answered 3 years ago
2019 Accord Hybrid with the same issue. 50-55 MPH and it can be deafening at times. Hoping for a solution and will be checking back regularly. Thanks all!

I had the same problem in my 2020 Accord Hybrid at 53 mph. Finally had it fixed by the dealer today as a warranty repair. I found online that Honda has issued a service bulletin #21-053 entitled "Booming or humming noise from speakers while driving". I waited 18 months to get it fixed! Neither Honda nor the dealer informed me that this service bulletin existed. I had to find it myself.
snicker1973 answered 3 years ago
My dealer finally replaced the ANC main brain. The noise has stopped. They refused to even investigate replacing with 2021 ANC as suggested by Guru9B8X4H. Even though the loud humming has stopped, I still have what sounds like excessive road noise from front passenger side. I will return it to them to get this issue resolved. I have a 2020 Ram 3500 Diesel with ANC that is as quiet as a mouse inside at all speeds. You would think Honda could get this right.
I have had the same issue since I got the Hybrid Accord back in June 2020. I scheduled service at the local dealership and mentioned the 21-053 service bulletin. They did some testing and ordered a new ANC. Everything seems to be working well since the repair.

I have exact same issue and My car is 2021 Hybrid Accord. First, I thought it's a normal sound but now it's getting too loud and annoying. The dealers are not helpful. I want to join the complain.

Two years into ownership of a 2020 Accord Hybrid Touring and still not getting this resolved. Took the car in to the dealership last week and they replaced the ANC per the SB 21-053 but still making the noise in in the 50-55 mph range. Not sure if they used a 2021 version or not, but still not resolved. Calling for service once more....

I had this same issue with my 2020 Accord Sport. The noise started once the car was a operating temperature, between 10-40 MPH at around 1,500 RPM. When I presented to issue to my local dealer, I literally printed out this thread and referenced the Honda service bulletin #21-053. The dealer said they knew exactly what I was talking about as several other Accord owners had reported the same issue. They replaced two microphones and some foam that was improperly installed. All covered under warranty, of course. Humming/booming noise is now completely gone. Thank you to all that contributed to this thread. It certainly made my dealings with the dealership much easier!
