Gas leak

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1994 Nissan p/u truck
and due to an illness was unable
to drive.  So for about 6 years my
truck has pretty much been just
sitting in my driveway rotting
away.  I can drive now and would
like to get it running but when I
put gas in, it comes right out at
the bottom.  What causes this and
what should it cost to repair?

Water laying in the bottom of the gas tank rusted a hole. Metal is thin on these trucks, everywhere, and they have little corrosion resistance. Maybe $150 for a tank and $100 to install it. Better make sure there aren't a dozen more things wrong, six years is a long time. Brakes might be rusted solid. Have your mechanic go over it for an estimate. Twenty five years makes it a classic car.

Thank you for your response. I believe it's still a good truck, the body is straight, the bed had a liner which is still in good shape, the interior is still in good shape and it only has around 50k miles on it. Plus it was my mother's truck who has now passed so there's a lot of sentimental value for me. I believe your probably right that the tank has probably rusted through. And now I know about how much it should cost to fix. I appreciate your help.

Those were all good ideas and thank you for the points. I had a 1978 Datsun 520 truck. They did not galvanize the steel anywhere. Carry an extra fuel filter as rust particles from the tank will clog the filter. If the body is still good, it would be a collectable. I oil sprayed mine to control body rust here where they use road salt in the Winter. Also watch for the engine head bolts to loosen up and allow a coolant leak into the cylinders. This is an extremely easy engine to work on. Remove the valve cover to re torque head bolts. But don't enter it in a drag race....it has only 85 horsepower!
